Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan made important remarks to candidates in the preference marathon during a television program he attended. Emphasizing that good football is played with good footballers, Tarhan noted that a good education can also be achieved with good faculty members.
“A university must have a story”
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan pointed out that during the process of self-development, one must break from rote learning and create their own story; “If a child experiences a story with their parents and the society they live in during childhood, it settles into the child's subconscious. And the child's personality is formed. We refer to all these as scenarios in scientific terms. There are life scenarios we learn in childhood. These are stories, narratives, and friendships. These are various value standards formed by social networks. They enter our lives through stories. Stories later show us that when someone gets married, they've taken their childhood life scenarios, but when they marry, the actors have changed. At that point, that person must rewrite their life scenarios and stories. If they don't, personality conflicts begin. However, people need to adapt to new situations and new eras. A university should also have a story in every sense.”
“A good education is achieved with good faculty members”
Tarhan expressed what young people should pay attention to when choosing a university with these words; “Students need to know what they want when choosing a university. Because a university is no longer just a 'high school+'. Universities have differences from other high schools. There are four areas. First is normal vocational training, second is education, meaning goals, and third is R&D. Young people should look at how the university’s R&D area is structured. They should examine how much importance it gives to R&D, what its R&D focuses are, what it does, and the laboratory conditions. They should look at the professors' work in this field and observe their competencies. Because good football is played with good footballers. Therefore, a good education is achieved with good faculty members. Opening the students' door and being the key to the treasure means rediscovering the treasure. The key to knowledge is given.” he said.
“There is a future in universities with intelligent and diligent people”
Prof. Dr. Tarhan emphasized that accessing information has become easier today; “Accessing information is easy, but to access correct information, mastery and wisdom are needed. The university needs to create a common communication area. In this common communication area, students will meet with professors. If a professor closes themselves in their office and does not meet with students, students should stay away from that university. It is full of intelligent and lazy people there. There is a future in universities with intelligent and diligent people. In this era, there is already common knowledge, collective intelligence. There is no individual intellect, no individual genius. One of the best perspectives analyzing this era is that it is a time for teamwork; even an individual cannot keep up with this time alone. We need to modernize while preserving our own values. These are also universal values. The Western world discovers them later. A certain success is a total success and becomes evident at the end of life.” he said.
“For a quality work, you must have a mission and vision”
Tarhan, pointing out that vision opens the door to reason; “Vision opens doors, and mission creates an action plan and follows that path. When we founded Üsküdar Üniversitesi, we stated at its establishment that genetic sciences, neuroscience, and health sciences should be together, and we defined our R&D focus as a university. We did not say we would specialize in everything; we established computer engineering, at a time when computer engineers were having trouble finding jobs, we set up computers, prepared software, and after establishing these, we started with molecular biology genetics and bioengineering. This became our R&D focus, and we tried to grow based on it. We formed connections when necessary. Disciplines are already an area; we synthesized medical sciences, engineering sciences, and natural sciences. For a quality work, you must certainly have a mission and vision.” he stated.
