Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan Explained 'Psychological Well-being'!

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan was the guest of the live broadcast held on the official Instagram account of NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital. In the broadcast moderated by Şaban Özdemir, Tarhan made evaluations regarding "Psychological Well-being." Tarhan, who touched upon what ideal competition should be like, said; "Peaceful competition is beneficial. Humankind should compete with the goals it sets for itself, not with others. Competing with yourself harms no one."

"Before the pandemic, people had overstepped their bounds"

Tarhan, stating that 2020 will be an unforgettable year with the Covid-19 pandemic; "The pandemic pushed everyone quite hard. This process will, of course, pass. An important feature of the epidemic is that it is global and coincides with a period where medicine is very advanced. Before the pandemic, people had become very spoiled and overstepped their bounds, so the pandemic was like a slap in the face for humanity. Selfish and narcissistic civilizations suddenly focused on their own problems. This period allowed people to breathe. People were also treating nature roughly. Now, nature is putting humanity in its place," he said.

"We must represent the concepts of good and beautiful"

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that the computer is the most powerful scholar in this era where technology is dominant; "In this period, wisdom will be rediscovered, and knowledge will be kept alive. I have great faith in young people in this regard. In this era we live in, the importance of the concept of a good person will be understood sooner or later. If we become good people in the period we are in, only then will we be able to live. Representation is very important; people need to represent the concepts of good and beautiful. The current introspection and self-criticism will lead us to good places. Psychologically, we are not going to good places right now; suicide rates have increased, divorce rates have increased, but society is not naive. It sees everything now, and everything can improve," he said.

"In Turkey, there is instruction, not education"

Tarhan, referring to the negative effects of technological addiction; "Technology affects us globally. Children who have technology in their hands from an early age cannot fully learn social skills. They cannot develop fine motor and gross motor skills. Only logical skills develop. The lack of development in all skills can lead to autism. After the pandemic, experiential learning and on-site learning should be implemented. Currently, in Turkey, there is instruction, not education. We have no instruction other than exams. Why do we reduce the most important decision in a person's life to an exam? How will education be compensated? This is a very important issue. During the pandemic, students attending private schools got ahead. We must rectify this situation as soon as possible," he said.

"Peaceful competition is beneficial"

Tarhan also touched upon the impact of competition on psychological well-being, emphasizing what ideal competition should be like. Tarhan said; "Peaceful competition is beneficial. Humankind should compete with the goals it sets for itself, not with others. Competing with yourself harms no one. Malicious competition with others does not lead a person to a good place. Ideal competition is the competition we set for ourselves. In life, conflict is an exception, while cooperation is the essence. Especially in the family, a competitive relationship is bad; it means trust is weakening. We must always be complementary to each other."
