Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Founding Rector of Üsküdar Üniversitesi, was invited to the graduation ceremony of İstanbul Üniversitesi Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine. Tarhan was presented with an honor plaque for his 50th year in the medical profession. Prof. Dr. Tarhan, who graduated from Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1975, emphasized the human dimension of the medical profession in his speech at the ceremony. Stating that medicine is not merely about treatment, Tarhan drew attention to the importance of the ability to empathize with patients.

At the ceremony held at the Yahya Kemal Beyatlı Performance Center, Prof. Dr. Tarhan was presented with a special plaque for his 50th year in the profession.
“We learned a lot from 1975 to 2025…”
Prof. Dr. Tarhan, who graduated from Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1975, emphasized the human dimension of the medical profession in his speech at the ceremony. Stating that medicine is not merely about treatment, Tarhan said; “We learned a lot from 1975 to 2025 and continue to learn. The most concise advice for a prospective physician is the saying of Avicenna (Ibn Sina), uttered a thousand years ago and confirmed by neuroimmunology today: ‘The physician rarely cures, more often he comforts.’ This statement emphasizes the ability to empathize with the patient.”

Thanking İstanbul Üniversitesi Cerrahpaşa Rector Prof. Dr. Nuri Aydın, Tarhan continued his speech by sincerely wishing all graduates success; “I wish you all good health, peace of mind, and a life full of success. I extend my thanks to the İstanbul Üniversitesi Cerrahpaşa Rectorship for their kindness in remembering us, and to the true hero parents who raised wonderful children.”
