Prof. Dr. Nesrin Erçelen: “We are in the top 10 in the world!”

Prof. Dr. Nesrin Erçelen, faculty member of the Department of Medical Genetics at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Medicine, was among the top 10 in the world with the study they conducted during the Covid period. Erçelen's studies at Üsküdar Üniversitesi also make significant contributions to the literature.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, we encountered a systemic infection unlike any other, one that paralyzed our immune system. While none of the available drugs were effective for treatment, Medical Genetics Specialist Prof. Dr. Nesrin Erçelen and her team, who continue their work at Üsküdar Üniversitesi, utilized newly developed cellular systems, technology, and biotechnology-based treatments, which were rapidly approved through both legal and ethical processes and put into practice. Thanks to these special treatment protocols, many people were saved and returned to life.

One of 10 centers…

Approximately 1262 stem cell treatment studies were published worldwide during the Covid-19 pandemic. In an important meta-analysis conducted to scientifically evaluate the success of the treatment, scientists found that only 10 centers out of these 1262 publications had clinical Covid-19 studies suitable for meta-analysis criteria. Prof. Dr. Nesrin Erçelen and her team, with their work, took their place in the literature as one of these 10 centers in the world, following 4 from China, 1 from Germany, 1 from the United States, 1 from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and 1 from Russia.

Medical Genetics Specialist Prof. Dr. Nesrin Erçelen provided the following information about her studies that entered the literature:

Prof. Dr. Nesrin Erçelen: “We treated one third of the patients”

“Our study, its benefit, working method, and protocol were accepted exactly as they appeared in the meta-analysis. It took its place in the literature as one of these 10 centers in the world after China, Germany, UAE, USA, and Russia. Subsequently, the results of our 210 patients, whom we treated and followed up in 2020-2021 and published, were evaluated in another meta-analysis. It was a meta-analysis by Mayo Clinic. This analysis showed a significant reduction in diseases and deaths in 736 patients with Covid-19-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) from 34 scientifically evaluable studies conducted globally during the same period, as a result of mesenchymal stem cell (medicinal signaling cell) therapy. Among the 736 patients presented in the study, 210 patients whom we treated and monitored in 2020-2021 belong to Erçelen and her group. This means that, during this period, we treated almost one-third of the patients in studies that met scientific evaluation criteria. Both meta-analysis results demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cell therapy significantly reduced Covid-19 related deaths and disease manifestations; supported lung functions; and has the potential as a safe new form of treatment. Furthermore, we showed that the allogeneic stem cell therapies we used during treatments could also offer hope for other systemic diseases. These new version biological drugs were prepared specifically for individuals and with stem cells. According to the information in the literature, they were applied in single or multiple sessions based on the patient's condition, using our self-developed protocols. We contributed to the recovery of some intubated patients, the discharge of some patients from intensive care, and the recovery and regaining mobility of some patients who suffered clots and paralysis. We are very proud and happy. These scientific results illuminated and accelerated our medical work and, consequently, medical work at other centers worldwide.”
