Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör: “The field best suited for Generation Z is communication”

The field of communication is now entirely shaped by digital technologies. Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör noted that Generation Z, born into the digital realm, is proficient in all aspects of the digital world, and therefore observed that studying in the field of communication, or pursuing a job or profession within or related to this field, is a great pleasure for Generation Z. Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör said, “Generation Z communicators can bring very different and interesting advancements to the field of communication and all its professional branches, with their creativity and technological proficiency. Communication suits Generation Z very well.”

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Communication Dean Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör stated that university candidates are experiencing significant excitement these days.

The right choice means a happy life

Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör noted that after the scores are announced, it is now time for department and profession selection. She said, “The decision that young university candidates will make in these few days will affect their entire lives. The department they settle into based on their preferences will also shape the rest of their lives. Choosing a department is, in a way, choosing a profession. Therefore, when making this choice, young people should think very carefully, analyze the matter in detail, and make the best possible choice for themselves. The available opportunities and current conditions are, of course, very important, but still, people largely live their own choices. The right choice means a happy and enjoyable life. If an individual analyzes their dreams, talents, expectations, current conditions, and available opportunities very well when making their choices and makes their choice according to all these dynamics, they will have made the right choice.”

Success means self-realization

Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör noted that one of the important conditions for making the right choice is for the individual to know themselves very well. She said, “They should not forget that this life is theirs. The opinions and suggestions of people around them, families, and relatives are, of course, important. They should listen and evaluate them, but at the final stage, they should not forget that this life is their own and they have the right to live it as they wish. Others' choices might lead them to success, they might gain significant financial benefits, and they might reach important positions in terms of status, but if they cannot create a field of work and endeavor where they can realize their own dreams and infuse their own emotions, they will be deprived of joy and pleasure. This can make them unhappy. Therefore, they should heed suggestions, but at the final stage, they should listen to the voice of their own dreams, emotions, hearts, and, of course, their brains. Success only becomes true success when it is imbued with pleasure. An individual can only realize themselves if they enjoy the department they will study and find pleasure in the work they will do.”

The right choice means vision and future

Emphasizing that not only today but also the future should be considered when choosing a department and profession, Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör said, “It is necessary to closely follow the course of the world and make accurate predictions. The department they choose and the field they will study carrying them into the future is an important criterion for success. Therefore, fields open to development and progress should be at the top of young people's preferences. Certain departments and professions have a traditional respectability in society. However, young people should not be limited by these, but rather shift their preference areas beyond these traditional boundaries and perception, evaluating the situation from a much broader and innovative perspective, which will lead both them and society to success. It should not be forgotten that the choice we make concerns not only us, but also the society and the world we live in. The brighter the future positioning of the field we choose, the stronger our contribution to the world, society, and humanity will be.”

Communication, the shining star of the digitalizing world

Prof. Dr. Güngör noted that digital technologies have begun to be used effectively in every segment of life. She said, “It can be said that the world has experienced a digital revolution, especially with the pandemic. It would not be wrong to say that the world of the future will also be built upon these technologies. Judging by the trend, the shining star of the future is the field of communication. Media and communication studies are also making significant strides in line with these developments, and new business areas are emerging. The boundaries of traditional media have long been exceeded. A wide variety of business sectors have emerged and continue to emerge in the field of communication at macro and micro levels. With digital technologies, various work and endeavor areas of traditional media (radio, television, cinema, newspaper, etc.) shaped in the new media environment have developed. Social media, digital journalism, digital television broadcasting, digital advertising, digital public relations, social media, digital cinema, etc., are diversifying at an incredible speed. This also means that the employment opportunities in the field of communication are rapidly enriching and diversifying.”

Employment opportunities in communication are increasing

Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör pointed out that the expansion of the communication field from media studies to software and artificial intelligence studies, and artistic and design fields, has broadened its scope of operation and functionality. She added, “Similarly, the increasing collaboration and partnership of the communication field with scientific disciplines such as sociology, psychology, philosophy, anthropology, history, economics, political science, etc., also enables a very significant expansion of its area of interest and engagement. All these factors make the field of communication a center of attraction, both scientifically and artistically and design-wise, especially for young people.”

Communication suits Generation Z very well

Emphasizing that the fact that the field of communication is now entirely shaped by digital technologies is very important in terms of its relationship with Generation Z, who were born into the digital world, Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör said, “I observe that for Generation Z, who are proficient in all aspects of the digital, studying in the field of communication or pursuing a job or profession within or related to this field is a great pleasure. With their technology usage skills and abilities, when Generation Z studies in a communication-related field, they can acquire a profession within this field that they can enjoy for a lifetime. Because the field of communication, which has both a scientific and an artistic and design character, is an area that allows young individuals, especially Generation Z, to activate their creative potential on a digital technological foundation. Generation Z communicators can bring very different and interesting advancements to the field of communication and all its professional branches, with their creativity and technological proficiency. Communication suits Generation Z very well…”

Digitalization, the collaboration of art and communication

Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör pointed out that with digital technologies, the field of communication and various art fields have begun to merge and interact. She said, “Communication sciences are expanding their scope towards the artistic and design areas of communication. Fields such as visual communication, animation, cartoons, and digital game design enable communication sciences to expand and strengthen from a purely scientific and theoretical structure to an applied and design-oriented structure. The journey of communication towards artistic and design fields also intersects with computer-based academic and professional fields such as software and artificial intelligence, leading to very interesting and different advancements. The enrichment and diversification of the communication field with digitalization also means collaboration with almost many other fields and business sectors. This makes communication the shining star of today, but especially of the future.”

As sociological and psychological problems increase, the importance of communication also grows

Prof. Dr. Güngör noted that while the field of communication expands its area of activity and competence towards fields such as art, design, artificial intelligence, and software under the influence of digital technologies, its importance is also increasingly understood at a sociological and psychological level, concurrently with our era progressively becoming an age of crisis. She said, “Sociologists prefer to work with communication scientists in their search for solutions to the growing problems of society. Similarly, psychologists also prefer to work with communication scientists to resolve psychological impasses of individuals and society and find solutions to problems. This means that the process of communication collaborating with all other scientific and professional fields, both academically and professionally, is accelerating.”
