Stating that candidates are facing the reality of their scores after the announcement of YKS results, Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör pointed out that candidates who are not satisfied with their scores are undecided about whether to make a choice or not. Stating that making a decision is difficult but postponing is not the solution, Güngör reminded that universities have double major and minor programs. Güngör noted that candidates can make their choices by considering this, saying, “This is a tremendous opportunity, and it is possible for candidates to achieve their goals as soon as possible, moreover by multiplying and enriching them, instead of postponing their access to the goal.”
Üsküdar Üniversitesi Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör provided information about double major and minor programs and reminded candidates who are not satisfied with their YKS scores and are undecided about whether to make a choice, that they can make their choices considering these programs.
Candidates not satisfied with the results are anxious
Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör stated that the excitement of making choices began with the announcement of YKS scores, saying, “It’s not easy for candidates; they will make the most difficult decisions of their lives. They dedicated their childhood and youth to this path. They worked for years to study the department they wanted. Now is the moment of decision. But their work is tough because the competition is challenging. Perhaps there are professions they have aimed for since childhood, and now they are very close to them. They are now just counting the days to reach their dreams and future ideals that they have spread over years.”
Güngör also reminded them of the reality of scores, stating, “Some are experiencing the joy of getting the score they expected. There are only a few days left to get into the department they want. Others are not at all satisfied with their scores. It seems quite difficult for them to get into the department of their dreams. They are deeply concerned. They keep asking themselves whether they should not make any choices and prepare for the next exam, or try to get into a department according to their scores. It is certainly difficult to figure it out. Disappointment is never easy. They wonder if they should take a gap year, meaning, what if we don't make any choices this year and prepare very intensely for next year’s exam again,” touching upon the concerns of the candidates.
Uncertainty can be started with what is certain
Stating that making a decision is difficult but postponing is not the solution, Güngör said, “It would be better for them to discuss and evaluate this issue in more detail and with common sense. Higher education offers significant advantages to candidates. Double major and minor programs are the most important advantages in this regard. A student who enrolls in a department can also be entitled to study in another department within the scope of a double major program, depending on their success in the department. Thus, they have the chance to graduate from two separate programs with two separate diplomas at the same university at the same time, with a little more effort. This can also be an important option for young university candidates. Instead of postponing reaching their goal due to the confusion caused by disappointment, they can start their education in a department that suits their scores. From there, they can seize the opportunity for a Double Major Program (ÇAP) in the department they set as their goal. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to start with what is certain rather than postponing the goal amidst uncertainty?”
It is possible to achieve the goal by multiplying it instead of postponing it
Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör pointed out that the double degree or minor advantage offered by universities to students allows candidates to try to reach their goals by joining the system as soon as possible, saying, “For example, if someone who wants to study psychology at Üsküdar Üniversitesi could not get enough points to get into this department, they can enroll in another department of the university and then study psychology within the scope of a ÇAP. Thus, while aiming for one department, they can graduate from two departments, have two diplomas, which offers them more opportunities in their professional life. This is a tremendous opportunity, and it is possible for candidates to achieve their goals as soon as possible, moreover by multiplying and enriching them, instead of postponing their access to the goal.”
Güngör advised candidates to visit universities before making their final decisions and concluded her words as follows:
“They should get information from preference counselors at universities. We, as Üsküdar Üniversitesi academicians, are here. Our preference counselors are ready on our campuses to inform our candidates about all the details they desire. Instead of experiencing disappointment, they should come and consult with us. Let's determine the roadmap together on how to reach the goal as soon as possible and with extra advantages. Time is valuable; it is necessary to make rational decisions instead of postponing. For this, one must be in the right place, meet the right people, and make the right choice.”
