The Perfusion Department of Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences organized an event titled ‘History of Perfusion’. Üsküdar University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hikmet Koçak participated as a speaker at the event. Making statements about the importance of perfusionists, Koçak said; “The responsibility of perfusionists is at least as important as that of a surgeon. Surgical success means team success.”
“One should never deny the past”
Emphasizing that healthcare professionals will build the future, Prof. Dr. Hikmet Koçak said; “The past is always important. We need to know historical information, to see where we have come from and where we are going. It is beneficial to make a note of history, and to uncover those notes from time to time, even if they are covered up. In a perfusion state, the entire body, except for the heart and lungs, becomes inactive. If circulation is not maintained in all organs, it leads to problems. Heart diseases have a long history. In some Christian denominations, a special place is reserved for the heart. In all religions, the heart is considered sacred. In Islam, the heart is divided into two: one is centered on nourishing our body, and the second is the spiritual heart related to the soul.”
“As technology increases, comfort increases”
Koçak, touching upon the fact that the equipment used for perfusion has improved technologically, gave advice to students. Koçak said; “We see that the first surgeons did wonderful work; their achievements are commendable. As technology advances, comfort increases. Perfusionists can perform their jobs more easily. Although these developments over 100 years may seem dizzying, they are not; there is still much to be done. Previously, there were no sensors, level detection, etc. Patients need to be delivered to intensive care in the best possible condition. The responsibility of perfusionists is at least as important as that of a surgeon. Surgical success means team success. The team at the head of the pump is of great importance. You should have a goal, and continue your work by building upon it.”
