Political Scientist Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan, stating that the 21st century is a period of crises, spoke about the existence of new global crises and emphasized the necessity of viewing and understanding the world from a multi-perspective angle. Arıboğan pointed out that artificial intelligence will inevitably penetrate all fields, stating that analyzing data is as important as collecting it, and fundamental areas such as philosophy, history, and sociology will become extremely functional. Arıboğan stated that the future will not be bright if one cannot access information, creativity, entrepreneurship, or analytical ability that cannot be found on Google, and that Political Science and International Relations departments are entering their brightest period, while the fashion of sociology, history, and philosophy will never fade.
Dean of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan, provided information about the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and its educational strategies.
It is essential to view and understand the world from a multi-perspective angle
Stating that everyone studying and working in the field of social sciences in today's world should develop the practice of interdisciplinary reading, Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan said, “They should be able to survey a wide range from history to sociology, anthropology to technological innovations. The 21st century is a period of crises, and global crises that began with September 11th continue with the pandemic that erupted in 2020 after the 2008-2009 economic crisis. We face new global crises that will develop through climate and the digital realm. In addition, geopolitical competition between superpowers continues. Therefore, it is essential to view and understand the world from a multi-perspective angle.”
It is very valuable to plan the educational environment in a colorful, liberating, and mind-opening way
Arıboğan pointed out that foreign language no longer holds importance on its own, saying, “Because artificial intelligence technologies have made translation algorithms nearly perfect. A period will soon begin where everyone can understand every language. However, as Martin Heidegger expressed, 'language is the house of being,' and being able to penetrate the world of meaning of this house is not possible with ordinary language knowledge. It is also necessary to permeate multi-perspective cultural tools such as literature, music, art, and sports. Planning the educational environment in a very colorful, liberating, and mind-opening way is also very valuable. As Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founder Nevzat Tarhan stated; universities should be like the United Nations, but no one should have a privileged position or veto right like there.”
Project culture is very important at our university
Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan emphasized that the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has a vision to ensure curriculum permeability between departments and to support initiatives such as double major (ÇAP) and minor degrees, stating, “Every department is supported by other departments, and our students from all departments can take some of our fundamental academic courses. Project culture is very important at our university, and especially for the applied courses of our psychology students, we can utilize all the facilities of our NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi.”
The quest to raise obedient citizens, not creative ones, continues
Arıboğan stated that neither our education system nor our culture is suitable for raising young, dynamic, agile, world-citizen politicians, saying, “Everything starts from the family. The quest to raise obedient, not creative, citizens continues both in schools and in social environments. In this regard, we see university life as a very important gateway for mental expansion. We try to teach our students to research and learn.”
Artificial intelligence will inevitably penetrate all fields
“We are in a period where localization dynamics are as effective as globalization dynamics,” said Arıboğan, adding, “Artificial intelligence will inevitably penetrate all fields. Analyzing data is as important as collecting it. In this respect, fundamental areas such as philosophy, history, and sociology will become extremely functional. I believe that your future will not be very bright if you cannot access information, creativity, entrepreneurship, or analytical ability that you cannot find on Google (Search engines).”
Sociology, history, and philosophy never go out of style
Stating that as Üsküdar Üniversitesi, they follow curricula and educational technologies all over the world, Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan said, “We have Erasmus agreements with hundreds of schools. Almost all of our faculty members have international experience. In this sense, we closely monitor the world.”
Arıboğan concluded by saying that he believes the departments of Political Science and International Relations are entering their brightest period:
“Sociology, history, and philosophy never go out of style. As Üsküdar Üniversitesi, we strive to educate individuals with high analytical skills, who are open to teamwork, project-oriented, and proficient in both global standards and state culture.”
