Experts state that the term 'powerhouse fruit juice' is generally used to describe fruit juices that are high in Vitamin C and support immunity, adding that such juices typically contain fruits like oranges, pomegranates, kiwis, lemons, and grapefruits, and provide nutrients such as vitamins A, C, E, potassium, and folic acid, which exhibit antioxidant effects.
Noting that one cup of powerhouse fruit juice can meet at least 70 percent of the daily Vitamin C requirement, Nutritionist Lect. Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu also addressed potential health risks associated with excessive consumption, explaining that it can raise blood sugar and increase the risk of insulin resistance, thereby potentially impacting the long-term risk of type 2 diabetes. She added that excessive Vitamin C intake can lead to the accumulation of oxalate in the body and contribute to kidney stone formation.

Lect. Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu from Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, made important statements about “powerhouse fruit juices,” which are frequently preferred in winter months to support the immune system.
Powerhouse fruit juices: A Vitamin C powerhouse
Hatunoğlu stated that Vitamin C-rich fruit juices are more frequently preferred in winter months to strengthen the immune system and protect against diseases. She said, “The term 'powerhouse fruit juice' is generally used to define fruit juices that are high in Vitamin C and support immunity. These types of fruit juices usually contain fruits such as oranges, pomegranates, kiwis, lemons, and grapefruits. They are high in nutritional value because they contain nutrients like vitamins A, C, E, potassium, and folic acid, which have antioxidant effects, but their fiber content is lower compared to the fruit itself.”
Vitamin C also helps support the immune system
Lect. Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu, providing information about powerhouse fruit juices, continued as follows:
“Particularly thanks to their antioxidant-acting nutrients, they help protect against infections by fighting pathogens entering the body, neutralize free radicals to prevent damage to cells, and strengthen the skin barrier by aiding in the regeneration of skin cells. Furthermore, Vitamin C helps support the immune system by increasing iron absorption. Potassium maintains fluid balance in the body, regulates muscle and nerve functions, and supports heart health. A healthy heart and nervous system, in turn, help immune cells function correctly. According to the Turkish Nutrition Guide, the daily Vitamin C requirement for men and women in a diet containing approximately 2000 kcal of energy is 70 mg.”
One cup of powerhouse fruit juice can meet at least 70 percent of the daily requirement
Lect. Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu pointed out that these types of drinks are usually prepared with Vitamin C-rich fruits such as oranges, pomegranates, and lemons. She stated, “One cup (approximately 240 ml) of powerhouse fruit juice, while varying depending on the type of fruits used, can generally contain between 50 and 150 mg of Vitamin C and can meet at least 70 percent of the daily requirement.”
Freshly squeezed fruit juices should be consumed quickly
Hatunoğlu noted that Vitamin C is generally found in lower amounts in ready-made fruit juices because some vitamins can be lost during processing. She added, “Also, ready-made fruit juices can contain extra sugar and additives. It is important to consume freshly squeezed fruit juices quickly without letting them sit for too long to prevent Vitamin C losses.”
Risks also exist alongside benefits
Nutritionist Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu, also addressing the potential health risks that may arise from excessive consumption of powerhouse fruit juices, said, “Fruit juices contain a high amount of fructose, a natural sugar, and since fructose is a simple sugar, it can rapidly enter the bloodstream and raise blood sugar. This situation can increase the risk of insulin resistance, thereby potentially impacting the long-term risk of type 2 diabetes. Excessive energy and sugar intake can lead to weight gain. Due to the high amount of fructose in fruit juices, high consumption can lead to fatty liver disease. Fruit juices have lower fiber content compared to the fruit itself. Fiber, however, has important functions in preventing constipation and controlling blood sugar.”
Excessive Vitamin C intake can lead to kidney stone formation
Hatunoğlu concluded her remarks by stating, “Powerhouse fruit juices, especially when made with acidic fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, have low pH values. This acidic environment can have adverse effects on tooth enamel. Moreover, consuming large amounts of acidic fruit juice can increase stomach acid and lead to reflux. Some fruit juices, particularly those made from fruits like pomegranate, pineapple, and kiwi, can cause allergic reactions such as itching, rash, and swelling in individuals. Furthermore, excessive Vitamin C intake can lead to the accumulation of oxalate in the body and contribute to kidney stone formation.”
