A new laboratory has been opened for students of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering department at Üsküdar Üniversitesi's Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. The laboratory, which aims to provide students with a higher quality education by turning theoretical knowledge into practice to make learning permanent, features various training kits. Thanks to the training kits available in the ‘Power and Machines Laboratory’, the content of courses is strengthened, and students have the opportunity to work in the lab.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who visited the Power and Machines Laboratory, received information about the laboratory and training kits from Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker, Head of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, and Research Assistant Nazmiye Kopacak.

Res. Asst. Nazmiye Kopacak: “We aimed for students to be able to experience all systems”

Research Assistant Nazmiye Kopacak from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of Üsküdar Üniversitesi's Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences said; “We wanted to establish a laboratory to meet the needs of both the sector and our students. We considered what we could do together with existing companies in the sector. After that, we decided on our training kits. We aimed for students to be able to experience all systems…”

“We are starting to use the laboratory in potential postgraduate studies”

Kopacak, mentioning the content of the training kits available in the laboratory, said; “Within this scope, our laboratory includes the ‘Electrical Machines Training Set’, ‘Renewable Energy Training Set’, ‘Transmission Line Training Set’, and ‘Power Electronics Training Set’. Specifically, we have courses titled ‘Power Systems’, ‘Distribution Systems’, and ‘Electromechanical Conversion’ which are in the elective courses category in our curriculum. We inaugurated this laboratory with Assistant Professor Dr. Hamza Abunima to strengthen the content of these courses. In the Spring semester of the 2023-2024 academic year, this laboratory was actively opened for the use of our students and final-year students working on their graduation theses. We are starting to use this laboratory for the potential postgraduate studies of our current students. In the coming days, potential collaborations could also be established under the umbrella of the continuous education center with sector professionals, or professionals who haven't taken these courses but wish to develop themselves, and students who want to advance academically.”

“We aim to increase the number of courses in the elective courses category”

Res. Asst. Nazmiye Kopacak emphasized that the number of elective courses can increase thanks to the Power and Machines Laboratory; “Another important feature of this laboratory is that students who wish to work in facilities of 1 kV and above within the electrical and electronics sector need to obtain an authorization certificate from the Chamber of Electrical Engineers. To obtain this authorization certificate, the Chamber of Electrical Engineers reviews students' transcripts and checks whether fundamental courses have been taken. After seeing at least three of these courses on the student's transcript, electrical engineers register them for this authorization training. The document obtained allows us to provide independent consulting engineering services. They can provide services in this field in the sector, including project, measurement, consultancy, and engineering advisory services. In this context, of course, we aim to increase the number of courses in the elective courses category in the coming years.”

The existence of a laboratory is crucial for national development activities

Kopacak extended her thanks to everyone who supported the opening of the laboratory; “I would like to thank Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Prof. Dr. Osman Çerezci, Head of the Electrical and Electronics Department Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker, and Assistant Professor Dr. Hamza Abunima for all their material and moral support in opening this laboratory. Believe me, the existence of a laboratory is vital not only for the student but also for the instructor, the university, and subsequently for national development. It holds significant importance in long-term promotional activities, the prestige of our university, and in creating potential job opportunities through sector collaborations. We have a small inventory in a limited area, but we have created an environment to share with our students all the content they might encounter in the sector for fundamental courses, and to transfer our experiences. In this regard, I would like to thank all our academic and administrative staff again.”
