Personal development tips and career journey in health discussed

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Vocational School of Health Services First and Emergency Aid Program organized an event titled 'Personal Development Tips And Career Journey in Health'. Paramedic Anıl Can Gürgen was a guest at the event. Gürgen emphasized that students should strive to graduate fully equipped, and noted that people who take steps towards self-actualization also have a vibrant demeanor.

Student interest in the event, held at Çarşı Campus Emirnebi 2 Conference Hall, was high. The event was moderated by Ayşe Bağlı, Lecturer and Head of the First and Emergency Aid Program.

“We need to make an effort to graduate fully equipped”

Paramedic Anıl Can Gürgen, emphasizing the importance of first aid certification, said: “Regardless of which vocational school of health services or health college we graduate from, there is a certificate we might need throughout our lives, and that is the first aid certificate. And then, the first aid instructor certificate. Regardless of which branch we graduate from, there is no circular or rule stating that training will start as soon as we are appointed. If there is an instructor suitable for your branch at your appointed place, or equipment accordingly, then you have received the training. Before graduating, we need to make an effort to graduate fully equipped. We must perform every practice. Being entrepreneurial, being proactive, speaking effectively and beautifully, always expressing an injustice you face with a good demeanor, not being suppressed, your demeanor, your CV—these are extremely important at every stage of your life.”

“Get advice from those who know you best”

Gürgen emphasized that before embarking on a professional career and afterward, at every stage of life, one must know their aptitudes; “This is very important: ‘What are my aptitudes, what can I achieve, what can I overcome, in which areas are my manual skills strongest, how can I develop myself further, am I aware of my potential?’ These are the first questions. How does one develop themselves in the best way? I developed a principle for myself throughout all stages of my life. There were many who spoke by directly looking at the outcome from the outside, but I had a close friend who personally knew every difficult process I went through, having witnessed it closely. His advice was more valuable to me. Because he was always a part of the process during the time I experienced it. He always followed me closely. He never focused on the outcome. That's why you should get advice from those who know you best.”

“Our goal is to save human lives”

Paramedic Anıl Can Gürgen stated that one should be happy in the job they do throughout their life; “In professional development and academic career, our goal is to save human lives. We can also think of this as our own family and loved ones, so since there is no tolerance for even the slightest mistake, ‘How can I develop myself professionally and translate this into scientific research?’, and how I can contribute to science were my fundamental principles. Whatever job we do, being happy in the work we do throughout our lives is very important. If we do a job we don't like or want to do, it will make us feel unhappy throughout our lives.”

“Demeanor is the mirror of a person”

Gürgen stated that getting to know other cultures allows us to look at the culture we live in and were born into from a different perspective; “In this case, we become more tolerant, more moderate individuals. This is also reflected in our behavior. I want to emphasize the importance of demeanor. Hospitals, ambulances, emergency services, intensive care units are important in all health services. Unfortunately, there are some among my colleagues whom I wish to criticize. A very harsh, very rude demeanor, who has not polished their manners in any way but was appointed by scoring a certain point in due time. I am of the opinion that people who truly add something to themselves, who take steps towards self-actualization, also have a vibrant demeanor. Because it definitely reflects in one's demeanor. Unfortunately, due to harsh demeanors, unnecessary controversies can sometimes arise. This can also lead to misunderstandings. I say demeanor is the mirror of a person.”

“There is a sign in body language that includes psychological states”

Gürgen, emphasizing the importance of body language, said: “There is something we might need as much as diction, and that is body language. Because whether I am tense, stressed, or even have a guilty profile, no matter how much professionalism I show in this regard, there is always a sign in body language that includes psychological states. The important thing is to be able to analyze it, or we can determine through analysis whether a friend is lying to you. It's not one hundred percent reliable, but some clues are very important, very specific.”

“You must find this gift”

Gürgen offered advice to the students, saying: “Life will undoubtedly one day have a gift for people who build good human relationships, develop them, collaborate, and contribute to society and science. Sooner or later, you must find this gift at some stage of your life.”
The event concluded after a Q&A session.
