The Permanent Residents of the Streets: The Homeless…

Moderated by Prof. Dr. Barış Erdoğan, Head of the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Üsküdar Üniversitesi, the 'Sociology of Everyday Life' series, planned to be held in the 2022-2023 Academic Year in collaboration with Üsküdar Üniversitesi Sociology Club and Sociology Department, was launched with an event titled 'The Unseen Face of Society: Homelessness'.

The event, held at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Güney Campus Fuat Zengin Conference Hall, was attended by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Türker, President of 'Çorbada Tuzun Olsun Association', Dr. Lecturer Nihan Kalkandeler from the Department of Sociology, and Lecturer Murat Otoğlu from the Department of Psychology, as speakers. Following the introductory speech by Halenur Demir, a student from the Sociology Club, Prof. Dr. Barış Erdoğan delivered the opening remarks.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Barış Erdoğan emphasized that homelessness is a comprehensive and profound social problem with psychological, sociological, economic, and political dimensions.

The first speech of the panel was delivered by Dr. Ahmet Türker, President of the Çorbada Tuzun Olsun Association. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Türker stated: “how important collaborations established between state and non-governmental organizations are, and solution proposals aiming to facilitate the socialization of homeless individuals”.

In her speech addressing the sociological aspects of homelessness, Dr. Lecturer Nihan Kalkandeler stated that solutions to the problem of homelessness should be found on international platforms within the framework of human rights that connect individuals and society.

The last speaker of the event, Lecturer Murat Otoğlu, in his speech discussing the psychological aspects of an individual becoming homeless, drew attention to the increasing number of homeless people worldwide every day.

The event concluded after participants' questions were answered.
