Üsküdar Üniversitesi Health, Culture and Sports Department (SKS), in collaboration with the Faculty of Health Sciences Perfusion Department and the Perfusion Club, held the “February 2nd Monthly Scientific Meeting”. During the meeting, many medical topics were discussed, from the use of ECMO devices to replantation techniques. Medical innovations covering a wide range from cardiac surgery to pediatric cardiac surgery were also discussed.

The meeting took place at the Ibn Sina Auditorium of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Health Sciences.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Vice Rector, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Hikmet Koçak, Başkent University Department of Cardiovascular Surgery Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Deniz Süha Küçükaksu, Prof. Dr. Noyan Temuçin Oğuş from Yeditepe University Hospital, and Faculty of Health Sciences Perfusion Department Head Prof. Dr. Ali Kocailik.

In the event where Perf. Işık Betül Kutlu, Perf. Hasan Bayram and Perf. Cüneyt İmamoğlu participated as speakers, Perf. Tarık Demir, Perf. İsmail Yerli, Perf. Hilal Can, and Perf. Ramazan Bacaksız participated as panelists.

Perf. Işık Betül Kutlu: “ECMO has reached higher levels with advanced techniques”

Perf. Işık Betül Kutlu delivered her speech titled “Our Experiences with ECMO Using Only Pneumatic Power as an Energy Source in the Kahramanmaraş Earthquake.” Kutlu said; “On the second day of the earthquake, aid came from many countries. Among these was an ECMO device, which was sent to Kahramanmaraş. However, it could not be used due to insufficient hospitals. When Gaziantep was consulted, I thought we could somehow evaluate it. Cardiogenic shocks due to hypothermia were occurring due to the cold weather. Although we anticipated we could help, I didn't expect us to use the device so quickly. ECMO, which has a history of approximately 40 years, has today reached higher levels with advanced techniques and special instruments.”

Perf. Hasan Bayram: “We aim to increase the success of replantation”

Perf. Hasan Bayram delivered his presentation titled “Different Use of Extracorporeal Circulation Support: Isolated Limb Perfusion.” Bayram said; “We use advanced techniques to preserve limbs and increase the chance of success in replantation procedures. As cooling alone may not be sufficient, we apply special protection methods. Advanced medical devices, such as neonatal oxygenators and special tube sets, are crucial for ensuring limb circulation and minimizing complication risks. Thanks to these methods, we aim to increase the success of replantation by preserving limb functions during long-duration operations.”

Perf. Cüneyt İmamoğlu: “Cardiac protection is a very important factor”

Perf. Cüneyt İmamoğlu delivered his presentation titled “Cardioplegia in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: Del Nido or Calaflore?” İmamoğlu stated; “Early postoperative deaths are generally associated with low cardiac output and postoperative problems, which is why cardiac protection is a very important factor. While the pediatric heart uses glucose as an energy source, the adult heart uses long-chain fatty acids, which creates a physiological difference. The neonatal heart is more sensitive to ischemic conditions and can suffer more damage due to calcium accumulation during hypoxia. Although techniques used in pediatric cardiac surgery are mostly adopted from adults, these may not be suitable for small children and neonates. Therefore, different strategies have been developed. One of the most commonly used methods is the Del Nido technique. This method is a long-acting solution and provides a significant advantage in terms of cardiac protection.”

Following the presentations, a question and answer session was held.

The program continued with a cocktail and conversation.
