Making evaluations on the importance of emergency medical services and the critical role of paramedics in the field on the occasion of December 1–7 Emergency Medical Services Week, Head of the First and Emergency Aid Program, Instructor Ayşe Bağlı, said: “The role of paramedics who actively serve in the delivery of emergency medical services is becoming more critical and indispensable with each passing day.”
Drawing attention to the challenges faced by paramedics in the sector, Bağlı stated: “The problems faced by paramedics include heavy workload, long working hours, incidents of violence and security problems, physical and psychological exhaustion, risk of infection, false emergency calls, difficulties in ambulance access to the scene or hospitals, and problems related to appointment and employment.”

Qualified human resources are targeted in emergency medical services
Explaining the purpose of the First and Emergency Aid Program, Instructor Ayşe Bağlı stated the following: “The First and Emergency Aid Program is an associate degree program that provides training to ensure the effective delivery of pre-hospital emergency medical services. As Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services First and Emergency Aid Program, our goal is to train knowledgeable and well-equipped healthcare personnel who can provide basic and advanced life support to patients and the injured during illness and accidents, perform emergency medical interventions in all kinds of trauma and emergency situations, ensure the safe transfer of patients and the injured to hospitals, communicate effectively with other healthcare personnel and relevant individuals in emergency situations, work in harmony with a team, identify problems in their field and develop solution proposals, are contemporary, human-centered, prioritize ethical principles, and follow scientific and technological developments.”
Essential competencies for emergency medical personnel
Listing the competencies expected from graduates, Instructor Ayşe Bağlı said: “The ability to recognize life-threatening situations early, perform the necessary first and emergency interventions properly, stabilize the patient and ensure safe transfer, use emergency equipment and technology effectively, make rapid decisions, behave calmly and professionally, and establish effective communication are the competencies expected from graduates.”
The role of paramedics in emergencies is indispensable
Evaluating the increasingly important role of paramedics, Instructor Ayşe Bağlı stated: “The role of paramedics who actively serve in the delivery of emergency medical services is becoming more critical and indispensable with each passing day. The increasing need for emergency medical services due to growing population and urbanization is among the main reasons. The need for emergency medical services may arise from a single patient or incident, as well as from mass incidents and disasters. Due to scientific and technological developments in the field of health, expectations from healthcare services are also increasing. Because of the importance of rapid intervention and the golden hour in emergencies, paramedics play an indispensable role.”

Sharing her predictions about the future of emergency medical services, Instructor Ayşe Bağlı concluded: “The contribution of developing information systems to the execution of emergency medical services, and the integration of artificial intelligence and technology as a standard part of emergency care.”
