"Pandemic and Loneliness" to be Discussed from All Aspects

The main theme of the International Loneliness Symposium, which will be held for the second time this year at Üsküdar Üniversitesi, is "Pandemic and Loneliness". The invited speakers of the symposium, which will be organized on December 4-5, 2020, consist of scientists, academics, journalists, and artists who will come together from various fields, both domestic and international, to contribute. Each speaker will present important discussions and raise significant questions, addressing loneliness within the context of the pandemic from their own field of work and perspective.  


Üsküdar Üniversitesi will host the International Loneliness Symposium for the second time this year, under the theme of "Pandemic". The effects of the pandemic process on loneliness will be discussed from all aspects.

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan to Address "Families and Loneliness"

Stating that the biggest impact of the pandemic affecting the whole world is loneliness, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, will present his talk titled "Families and Loneliness" in the first session of the symposium.

Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı to Discuss "Corona Loneliness"

Head of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Department of Sociology and also Symposium Coordinator, Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı, will make evaluations with his presentation titled "Corona Loneliness".

They will Discuss the Psychological Effects of the Pandemic

In the first session of the symposium, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Beyin Hastanesi will participate with 'Loneliness in Relationships'; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emel Sarı Gökten with 'Adolescent Loneliness and K-Pop'; Expert Psychologist Çiğdem Demirsoy with 'The Impact of the Pandemic on Loneliness in the Family'; and Expert Psychologist Aslı B. Bhais with 'The Relationship Between Addiction and Loneliness'.

Dean of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan, will give a talk on 'The Political Psychology of Loneliness'. Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz, Psychiatrist from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Beyin Hastanesi, will contribute significantly with 'Risks for the Elderly During the Pandemic: Is Loneliness a Choice or an Unwanted Outcome?'; Dr. Mert Akcanbaş from Üsküdar Üniversitesi with 'Global Insecurity and Loneliness'; and Psychologist İdil Arasan Doğan with 'Loneliness and Social Support in Old Age'.

Prof. Dr. Erol Göka: "Loneliness and Longing"

Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Erol Göka from Health Sciences University Faculty of Medicine will discuss the relationship between loneliness and longing, also addressing the pandemic process, in his talk titled 'Loneliness and Longing'.

Prof. Dr. İbrahim Sirkeci to Address "Pandemic and the Isolation of Migrants"

Prof. Dr. İbrahim Sirkeci from Regent's University London, in his presentation titled 'Pandemic and the Isolation of Migrants', will make observations by highlighting that the period when borders closed and economies came to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic was a very challenging process for refugees and migrants.

Prof. Dr. Gönül Bünyatzade: "Loneliness and Creativity"

Prof. Dr. Gönül Bünyatzade from Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences will present on 'Loneliness and Creativity', while academic Dr. Floris Van Vugt from Montréal University, Canada, in his presentation titled 'Fostering Interpersonal Closeness in Video Conferencing by Synchronized Movement', will discuss the importance of communicating, listening, and understanding in today's world where alienation and separation are increasing, and how this can be achieved in online connections.

Dr. Orhan Aras: "Europe's Ordeal with Pandemic and Loneliness"

Author Dr. Orhan Aras, participating from Germany, will conduct a comparative discussion in his talk titled 'Europe's Ordeal with Pandemic and Loneliness', touching upon different perceptions and manifestations of loneliness. At the symposium, which Prof. Dr. Mehmet Akif Okur from Yıldız Technical University will join with his presentation titled 'The Political Economy of Loneliness and the Turkish House: Where from the Pandemic?', psychologist Dr. Olga Rubchova from St. Petersburg Bekterev Medical Center will draw attention to the increasing extreme stress experienced by people during the quarantine process in her presentation titled 'The World During the Pandemic: Anxiety Epidemic and Depression'.

Loneliness and Pandemic to be Evaluated from All Aspects

Also at the symposium, journalist Özay Şendir will present 'Pandemic Loneliness and Media'; photographer, director, and screenwriter Murathan Özbek will address the loneliness-pandemic relationship from a different dimension through the lens of art in his talk titled 'Pandemic, Art, and Loneliness'.

Prof. Dr. Jyldyz Urmanbetova from Kyrgyzstan-Turkey Manas University, 'Loneliness in the Context of Social Exclusion and Creativity'; Dr. Baver Demircan, 'Loneliness: Can the Pandemic Be an Opportunity?'; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kristina Ivanenko from the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, 'New Loneliness: How Did the Pandemic Change Social Relations?'; Dr. Cihan Ertan and Research Assistant Özge Sarıalioğlu from Düzce University will present 'When the Stage Closes: COVID-19 Pandemic and the Loneliness Experiences of Performing Arts Actors'.
