The 'Nursing Department Career Event' was organized by the Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Nursing Department. The event was attended by Anadolu Medical Center Training Nurse Fatma Satıcı, Anadolu Medical Center Human Resources Specialist Özge Hayta, and NPİSTANBUL Hospital Training Nurse Specialist Nurse Kübra Melis Duran as guests.
The event, held at Üsküdar University NP Health Campus's Galenos conference hall, was attended by Prof. Dr. Selma Doğan, Head of the Nursing Department at Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences, Samet Doğruyol, Director of Nursing Services at NPİSTANBUL Hospital, along with academic staff and students from the nursing department.
Prof. Dr. Selma Doğan; “Intercultural nursing has become a very important topic.”
Prof. Dr. Selma Doğan, Head of the Nursing Department at Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences, moderated the event and delivered the opening speech. Doğan stated; “Anadolu Medical Center Hospital is a very important institution for us, with which we have had a close connection for many years. Therefore, I extend my sincere thanks to Anadolu Medical Center for sharing the necessary information with us every year to help you take steps towards graduation and for bringing us together on new professional topics. Today, we will focus on two important subjects. Firstly, crucial 'capsule information' will be presented to you, especially since you will soon be applying for jobs. Secondly, as you know, internationalization in healthcare services has become very important. We have many international patients. For this reason, intercultural nursing has become a very important topic, as we also discuss in our courses. So, they will share their work with us.”
Nurse Fatma Satıcı; “Care that disregards culture loses its chance of success from the start.”
Fatma Satıcı, speaking about Intercultural Nursing Hospital Practices; “As Anadolu Medical Center, our main goal is not to provide individual care, but rather to understand 'what is their culture?', 'what are their beliefs?', and 'how should we approach them?' and provide nursing care by making this distinction. None of us are alike, but we can work and communicate in the same environment. Therefore, we advocate not for people to be similar, but for dissimilar people to be able to coexist. With transcultural nursing, we exhibit a sensitive, effective, and holistic approach to the cultural needs of individuals, families, and groups.”
“Patient-centered care is very important for us.”
Satıcı, speaking about the importance of patient-centered care; “As ASM, we host a large number of international patients. When we compare our Turkish patients with our international patients, 80% are international patients and 20% are Turkish patients. We are an institution that values the religious beliefs, traditions, and social activities of our patients and employees. In this regard, we have rooms arranged according to various beliefs so that our patients can fulfill their religious needs without any restrictions. On certain days, we organize occupational therapies such as various music concerts, meditation, and breathing exercises.”
HR Spec. Özge Hayta; “The most fundamental thing in nursing is people.”
Hayta, who conducted an effective simulation on interview techniques; “My main goal here is for you to practice your truly valuable profession in places you deserve. I say this at every school I visit; you might consider working in the public sector, or at a family health center, or in the private sector, but first, add value to your profession and then make these applications. Because nursing is still one of the most sought-after professions. Nursing, like other professions, is not just a job done for money. The most fundamental thing in nursing is people. The spiritual values there are very different. So, I hope all of you reach excellent positions as you aim for; know that you are very valuable. As human resources, I know this, and we only conduct recruitment interviews and hire graduates with bachelor's degrees. More than 80% of our nurses currently hold bachelor's and master's degrees. So, when you graduate from here, you are already very valuable nurses.”
“Our profession is the profession of care.”
Hayta, emphasizing the importance of holistic patient care; “Recruitment interviews vary greatly depending on the institution, friends. One of the most important things we want to hear is, 'I primarily provide holistic care to my patient,' meaning we're not talking about invasive procedures or treatment procedures, but fundamentally about holistic care. Be sure to establish this as your foundation because our profession is the profession of care. One of the things expected from you is to be able to give examples. If you remain silent for every question asked, it means you cannot express yourself well at all. Besides this, I pay great attention to this: I ask every candidate, 'Do you know us?' You should definitely research the hospitals you will apply to and want to work for beforehand. You can say in a few words that you've heard it's a good hospital or that it values its employees. It is very important to convey the message, 'I really want to work here, I researched you and came.' The team should be very important to you, because everyone interviews someone to include them in their team. Finally, don't forget the support systems; know that in the institution you work for, there will definitely be a responsible nurse, a mentor nurse, or if necessary, a doctor to support you, friends.” She concluded her speech by offering advice to the students.
Spec. Nurse Kübra Melis Duran; “We are an institution that has adopted patient safety at an international level as its principle.”
Duran, providing information on NPİSTANBUL Hospital's Nursing Services operations; “With the Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Program we have adopted at our hospital, we are an institution that has embraced patient safety at an international level as its principle. As a nursing department in our institution, we plan staffing to maintain the highest quality patient-nurse relationship, prioritize patient-employee safety, and strive to provide an environment that ensures our nurses' professional satisfaction. During the orientation period, we complete the process in the best possible way with follow-up and record-keeping through mentor nursing, weekly meetings, and end-of-orientation interviews.”
The event concluded with a group photo session and plaque presentation.
