GZT Editor-in-Chief Doğukan Gezer was the guest of the event organized by Üsküdar Üniversitesi Health, Culture, and Sports Directorate. The event took place at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Main Campus Kuleli Hall. With the strong participation of Sociology Club students, the topic of 'New Media and Sociology' was discussed.
“We operate in the digital world sphere”
Doğukan Gezer, talking about GZT's story and its progress towards becoming a digital platform, said; “GZT's story, we are approaching five years. We operate in the digital world sphere. We are in a different situation from the traditional news consumption and media world as we know it. We attach great importance to these events. We started consuming our content and news from social media. GZT is actually known for being born differently and independently from all traditional media we know, such as newspapers, television, and radio. The concept we call digital media manifests itself in many areas within digital, such as content production process, editorial management, publication policy, narrative style, content language, and the area of publication. Our most important focus is our website application, but on the other hand, we also give importance to social media platforms; in fact, we have reached one million followers on Instagram, which is very valuable for us.”
“We want to raise awareness about the usage areas of new media”
GZT Editor-in-Chief Doğukan Gezer, emphasizing that the digital new media field is a constantly renewing concept and has a connection with sociology, stated; “The digital new media field is a constantly renewing concept. In such events, we want to raise awareness about the usage areas of new media. If I open a parenthesis for sociology, our publications definitely appeal to society and people. There is a very serious transformation in this field. Just as there is a digital transformation in media and commerce, we are talking about the same digital transformations in social life, sociology, human relations, family, and friend environments. This process is completely parallel to others.”
“It would be better for young people to work in digital fields”
Gezer, explaining the importance of digital fields to young people, also touched upon media literacy. Gezer said; “When we talk about digital media, a serious two-way communication has begun between us and the reader in order to develop positive or negative comments on any content you create. We are in favor of media consumers asking these questions better, as it provides much more valuable and qualified information to the reader when we look at the content of the digital media world. That's why I think media literacy is important. It would be better for new graduates to work in digital fields. You should think about how to benefit from the possibilities of technology and how to progress. Currently, we see that everyone is in the digital field in some way. Lawyers, psychologists, agricultural workers, etc. we can understand how important something that is in everyone's life is.”
