Üsküdar University’s 2025–2026 academic year began with the orientation programs of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry. On the first day of the orientation program, attended by academic and administrative staff, students of both faculties came together. Within the program and the departments operating under Üsküdar University provided information to the new members of the Üsküdar family.

The orientation program was held at the İbni Sina Auditorium of Üsküdar University NP Health Campus.

At the new academic year orientation, which was carried out in two separate sessions, the opening speeches were delivered by Üsküdar University Vice Rector Prof. Hikmet Koçak, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Haydar Sur, and Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry Prof. Ergün Yücel.

Prof. Hikmet Koçak: “To be a good doctor means to understand the patient…”
Vice Rector Prof. Hikmet Koçak gave a speech at the opening of the orientation program: “Medicine is more than a profession, and it is a way of life. It is a profession without nights or weekends. In fact, this profession is chosen because it serves humanity. Medicine is not simply prescribing medication and sending the patient away; it is the care and attention you show to the patient who comes to you physically and spiritually, entrusting themselves to you. If you do not understand the patient’s emotional state and only write a prescription, you are not a good doctor. To be a good doctor means to understand the patient.”

Prof. Haydar Sur: “The white coat means hope”
Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Haydar Sur spoke on the importance of the medical profession: “Medicine is a heavy profession. If you limit yourself only to being a doctor, you may fall into burnout syndrome, and gradually, the patients’ problems will no longer matter to you. To avoid this, one must develop productive hobbies such as art and travel. Being a doctor is a privilege, but this privilege also comes at a price, and you must work very hard to earn it. The white coat means hope, it means cleanliness, it means honesty. We must always be honest with our patients, their families, and our friends, because we will gain access to confidential information, we will perform procedures on their bodies and spirits, and with our effort, they will try to return to health.”

After the orientation for the Faculty of Medicine, the program continued with an orientation for the students of the Faculty of Dentistry.

Prof. Ergün Yücel: “Dentistry is also a master-apprentice profession”
Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry Prof. Ergün Yücel gave the opening speech for the dentistry orientation program: “Your field of work is human beings, and humans are the most sacred beings. We will be delighted to pass on to you the most accurate and knowledgeable ways of treating people. Along this path, your professors will be your greatest guides. Our doors are never locked, as long as your requests are reasonable, knocking will always be enough. Dentistry is also a master-apprentice profession. It contains elements of both craftsmanship and artistry. Therefore, visual precision and an aesthetic eye are very important. It is not only about looking, but it is about truly seeing.”
