Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Founding Rector of Uskudar University, met with a group of students from Necmettin Erbakan University Meram Faculty of Medicine and Selçuk University Faculty of Medicine at Uskudar University Central Campus Kuleli Hall. Meeting with young people from Konya, Tarhan shared his experiences in the field of Medicine with the students. Tarhan said; 'Shape your lifestyle. Reading is very important in the early years of the profession. You should know that a disease passes regarding theoretical knowledge. One needs to be an opportunity hunter. In the medical profession, knowledge needs to be constantly updated. Information gets old, you need to catch up. Science means being on the road.'

'It is not what one sees and reads, but what one experiences that shapes a person's personality'

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, giving professional advice to medical students staying at the Konya İlim Yayma Cemiyeti student dormitory, emphasized that life and its challenges are also learned during university life. Tarhan; 'You are at the first step of your profession, and seeing you now, I recalled my own student years. There were many Iranians in my friend group at Cerrahpaşa. We had many international students, and we still keep in touch with them. The more intensely you experience your togetherness here, the more beautiful memories you will have in the future. It is not what one sees and reads, but what one experiences that shapes a person's personality. Confucius has a saying: 'I heard and forgot, I saw and remembered, I did and I understood.' People learn through experiences and stories. Time spent together is important. While learning your profession, you also learn about life during university. We learn human relations. The skills put forward as 21st-century skills are not technical skills, but social and emotional skills. These are officially defined as emotional intelligence and social intelligence. Logical intelligence is singular, while social and emotional intelligence are plural and can be developed. Since I am also interested in neuroscience, the human brain is science's new frontier. Many developments in medicine will occur in this field. The brain and organs communicate with each other. Previously, these communicating organs were unknown, referred to as the autonomic nervous system, whereas it is singular,' he said.

'The master-apprentice relationship is important in medicine'

Tarhan, sharing his experiences with young people by giving examples from his book 'Bilinçli Genç Olmak' (Being a Conscious Young Person); 'The master-apprentice relationship is also important in medicine. You learn a lot from assistants. Don't chase after your professors, chase after the assistants. You have a higher chance of doing things together, gaining practical professional experience, and it happens alongside emotional and social skills. One needs to be entrepreneurial and assertive. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. I included special information on these topics in the book 'Bilinçli Genç Olmak'. The biggest reason I wrote that book was that I met high school students in a TV program, and in the Q&A session, I analyzed what was important for them, and this book emerged. It is necessary to invest in the future with what you will gain from that book. Hz. Ali (Ali ibn Abi Talib) has a beautiful saying: 'Raise your children not for your age, but for the age they will live in,' he said.

'Science means being on the road'

Emphasizing the importance of science, Tarhan pointed out that knowledge needs to be updated in the medical profession. Tarhan said; 'In our outlook on life, let's learn from the past, live in the present, but look to the future. You succeed when you build a bridge between the past and the future. When you look, there is traditionalism; traditionalism is difficult, like bringing the past to the present; what we need to do is learn from the past instead of bringing it. Shape your lifestyle. Reading is very important in the early years of the profession. You should know that a disease passes regarding theoretical knowledge. One needs to be an opportunity hunter. In the medical profession, knowledge needs to be constantly updated. Information gets old, you need to catch up. Science means being on the road. Information is not sacred and unchangeable. The current truths are these, the most accurate information provided by the data at hand. We will act according to this information. I also advise you to be open to all kinds of ideas,' he said.

'Young people, choose an area of interest for yourselves and proceed that way'

Stating that one should proceed with scientific evidence, Tarhan emphasized that the West is in great loss. Tarhan, expressing that young people should develop themselves and be innovative, said; 'In the lives of our Prophet and Mevlana, being human first is important, how wonderful that they valued being human. Prophetic ethics are very important. We have a Prophet who acts and approaches with inclusivity. Hasan Basri also draws attention to being honorable. He says not to be deceived by types who are religious but lie. There is much to learn from history. Acting with scientific reference is paramount. When you proceed with scientific standards, everyone falls silent. It needs to be proven with evidence. There is a problem in the medical profession due to Turkey's policies. The public needs prophetic ethics; the West has currently gone bankrupt. We included positive psychology as a course; there is a gratitude module, a forgiveness module, a sharing module, and an empathy module. These are things that exist in our culture, but we are slowly losing them. Because the West lost these, suicide has increased, violence has increased, crime has increased. These will always increase because the type of person being raised has started to change. For example, open marriage is common; they see this as freedom. How can a society without family survive? The West needs this. We need to show the bright face of Islam. In Turkey, there is a need for the geography of Islam. Don't migrate aspiring to the West; they will eventually come back to us. We are currently a bad example for the Middle East to the world. Islamophobia has developed as a prejudice in the West, and we caused these attitudes. Young people, choose an area of interest for yourselves and proceed that way. We need this,' he used the expressions.

The event concluded with Tarhan's book 'Bilinçli Genç Olmak' (Being a Conscious Young Person) being presented to the young people as a gift.
