Toxins brought by modern life accumulate in our bodies, threatening our health. Experts note that the toxic load in the body refers to the total amount of harmful chemicals, toxins, and heavy metals accumulated in a person's body. They state that while the body generally tries to eliminate toxins through organs such as the liver, kidneys, sweat glands, and intestines, when an excessive amount of toxins accumulates or the body cannot eliminate these toxins effectively enough, the toxic load can increase and create negative effects on health.

Nutritionist Lecturer Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu, stating that the best way to detox is to eat healthy, consume seasonal and natural foods, drink enough water, and increase physical activity, said, “As long as there isn't a medical problem, the body performs its own detox. It should not be forgotten that sustainable healthy eating habits are much more valuable in the long run than the quick fixes offered by detox diets.”

Lecturer Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu from Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, evaluated the toxic load in the body and its effects on health.

What is toxic load?

Nutritionist Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu, noting that the toxic load in the body refers to the total amount of harmful chemicals, toxins, and heavy metals accumulated in a person's body, said, “The body generally tries to eliminate toxins through organs such as the liver, kidneys, sweat glands, and intestines. However, when an excessive amount of toxins accumulates or the body cannot eliminate these toxins effectively enough, the toxic load increases and can create negative effects on health. The accumulation of toxic load can lead to functional disorders in different organ systems, weakening of the immune system, inflammation, and chronic diseases.”

Toxic load increases as pollutants enter the body via air, water, or food

Hatunoğlu stated that the most common sources of toxins encountered in daily life range from environmental factors to nutrition, stress levels, and habits, adding, “Environmental factors begin with pollutants in our natural environment, especially air, water, and soil pollution, and can increase the toxic load over time when inhaled via air or consumed via water and food. Additionally, BPA in plastics used daily, parabens in cosmetic products, and synthetic substances in shampoos are substances that can have directly harmful effects on the body.”

Processed foods and chronic stress also affect toxic load

Nutritionist Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu, stating that nutrition emerges as the most common and continuous way of exposure to toxins, continued:

“Processed products, sugars, and additives can strain the body's detoxification system, leading to their accumulation in the body. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to heavy metals and pesticide residues found in some food sources, as well as regular smoking and alcohol consumption, can also lead to an increase in toxic load in the body. Chronic stress can increase inflammation in the body and weaken the immune system. These changes brought by stress can also cause toxins to remain in the body for longer and prevent their elimination. Additionally, sleep irregularities and physical inactivity also make toxin elimination difficult; when the body does not get enough rest and movement, toxin elimination through sweat decreases.”

What are the harms caused by toxic load?

Hatunoğlu explained that the toxic load accumulated in the body can lead to immune system problems, hormonal imbalances, liver damage, cardiovascular and neurological problems in the long term, stating, “Therefore, to reduce these risks, it is very important to adhere to an antioxidant-rich diet, consume plenty of water, exercise regularly, manage stress, and pay attention to sleep patterns.”

How effective are detox diets and cures?

Hatunoğlu stated that the natural detoxification systems of a healthy individual's body (liver, kidneys, intestines) effectively eliminate toxins, adding:

“Most detox diets can yield results such as short-term weight loss and improved digestion, but these effects usually stem from healthy eating habits and calorie restriction. Furthermore, there is insufficient scientific evidence regarding the long-term health effects and safety of such diets. The best way to detox is to eat healthy, consume seasonal and natural foods, drink enough water, and increase physical activity. As long as there isn't a medical problem, the body performs its own detox. It should not be forgotten that sustainable healthy eating habits are much more valuable in the long run than the quick fixes offered by detox diets.”

What precautions should be taken…

Lecturer Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu from Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, also touched upon what should be done to reduce toxin exposure, concluding her remarks as follows:

“Using natural cleaning products to reduce chemical use, reducing plastic use, paying attention to air quality, reducing the consumption of foods containing pesticides and additives, and making sure to drink clean water are highly effective methods to reduce toxin exposure.”
