An event titled “Diagnosis and Treatment of Sleep Disorders” was organized by the Electroneurophysiology Program of Üsküdar University’s Vocational School of Health Services (VSHS). The program highlighted the importance of sleep hygiene and addressed disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia, and parasomnia. In addition, laboratory-based demonstrations were held on patient preparation, polysomnography (PSG) recording, and PAP titration procedures.

Held at the Emirnebi Conference Hall at Üsküdar University’s Çarşı Campus, the event featured guest speakers including Assoc. Prof. Seçil Bahar Dal, an ENT specialist from the American Hospital, and Esra Şahin, an Electroneurophysiology Technician from the same institution.

Moderated by Instructor Recep Yılmaz, Head of the VSHS Electroneurophysiology Program, the event aimed to raise awareness about sleep health, share recent developments, and provide hands-on training on patient preparation and reporting practices.

The event brought together healthcare professionals, academics, and students, focusing on modern diagnostic methods and treatment approaches for sleep disorders.

Instructor Recep Yılmaz: “Sleep problems lie at the root of many chronic diseases”

In his opening remarks, Instructor Recep Yılmaz emphasized that sleep health is not sufficiently valued in society. Stressing that sleep issues are at the core of many chronic conditions, he also provided a brief historical overview of sleep and shared practical tips for achieving healthy sleep. Yılmaz highlighted that every recording conducted by health professionals must meet gold standards and noted that every new piece of knowledge contributes significantly to both personal development and public health.

Assoc. Prof. Seçil Bahar Dal: “Sleep problems are not only personal, but also a public health concern”

In her presentation, Assoc. Prof. Seçil Bahar Dal, ENT specialist from the American Hospital, covered topics such as sleep apnea, insomnia, parasomnia, PAP therapy, and surgical treatments. “Sleep disorders are not only personal but also a societal health issue,” she stated, while also discussing current diagnostic methods, CPAP device usage, behavioral therapies, and non-pharmacological treatment alternatives.

Laboratory procedures demonstrated

During the second session of the program, Electroneurophysiology Technicians Burcu Acembaba and Esra Şahin conducted hands-on demonstrations and provided information about the materials and devices used in polysomnography. A polysomnography test and CPAP device setup were performed on volunteer student Adem Kolaş, with a focus on PAP titration. Following the demonstration, attendees' questions were answered, and reporting procedures related to the PSG test were also explained.

Aiming to raise public awareness of sleep disorders

The seminar aimed to raise societal awareness regarding sleep disorders and to ensure that healthcare workers stay up to date with the latest knowledge in the field. Through practical training, the program also addressed potential real-world challenges professionals may encounter. At the end of the event, Instructor Recep Yılmaz, Head of the Electroneurophysiology Program at VSHS, presented participants with certificates and sapling donation certificates.
