An event titled “The Effect of Smoking, Alcohol, and Drugs on Cancer” was organized by the Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (VSHS) Pathology Laboratory Techniques Program. During the event, the effects of substance use on cancer development were comprehensively discussed in light of scientific data. The damages caused by harmful habits at the cellular level and how these processes prepare the ground for cancer formation were shared with the participants.

Habits that increase cancer risk discussed

Prof. İbrahim Öztek, Head of the Department of Medical Pathology at the Faculty of Medicine, was a guest at the event held in the Yuşa Hall of Üsküdar University Çarşı Campus.
Asst. Prof. Eda Yetimoğlu, Head of the Pathology Laboratory Techniques Program, served as the moderator of the event, while pathology department students Büşra Kafkas, Sibel Telli, and Esra Kurtuluş also contributed to the event with their presentations.

Speaking at the event, Prof. İbrahim Öztek emphasized that the use of smoking, alcohol, and drugs leads to serious consequences not only for individual health but also for public health.
Öztek stated that these harmful habits weaken the immune system, reducing the body's resistance to cancer cells, and in the long term, increase the risk of developing various types of cancer.
