"Globalization and Ethics Through Bediüzzaman's Lens" book hits the shelves

Co-authored by Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özdemir, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Üsküdar Üniversitesi, and Ian Markham, Dean of Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS), a work exploring the thoughts of Bediüzzaman Said Nursi, one of the prominent Islamic scholars of recent times, has been released by Üsküdar Üniversitesi Publications. The book, titled "Globalization and Ethics Through Bediüzzaman's Lens," examines criticisms directed at Islam in the context of globalization, through Said Nursi's ethical perspective.

Brought together two different religions and cultures…

Despite coming from two different religions and cultures, the authors Özdemir and Ian's convergence on Bediüzzaman's understanding of ethics highlights the great cultural richness of the work. Furthermore, the book consists of articles by many distinguished authors. In a world dominated by negative globalization, where American values are imposed globally, there is a prevailing viewpoint that traps Islam and Muslims into stereotypes like "radical" or "pro-violence" and labels them with negative value judgments. The work, with a critical approach to this issue, reveals that Bediüzzaman Said Nursi, one of the late Islamic thinkers, differs from the framework described above, thus offering readers new perspectives by exploring the rich intellectual world of Muslims.

Due to the universal character of Nursi's message, readers find Islamic scholars conversing with Christian and Jewish academics on the nature of Islam and Said Nursi's contemplation.

While "ethics" and "globalization" are scrutinized in the book, articles on positive/anti-violence movements and modernity are also included to appropriately address and ensure understanding of these two topics. The work, evaluating criticisms directed at Islam by globalization within the context of Said Nursi's thoughts, opens new perspectives and windows for the reader.
