Global Support for the Global Well-being Manifesto

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Senate had published the “Global Well-being Manifesto” for the post-pandemic era last April. In the manifesto, shared with the public on April 22nd, Earth Day, by Founding Rector and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan on behalf of the Üsküdar Üniversitesi Senate, it was emphasized that there was concern about the general hopelessness caused by the pandemic in our country and worldwide. 

The “Global Well-being Manifesto”, declared by the Üsküdar Üniversitesi Senate on April 22nd, Earth Day, was sent to 589 universities worldwide, including leading universities. Congratulatory messages poured in for the manifesto, sent with the signature of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, from the world's most important universities such as Manchester and Stanford. Megan Swezey Fogarty, Vice President of Stanford University, stated in her thank-you message that ‘as part of higher education, they share Üsküdar Üniversitesi's commitment to civic education’; while the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology also congratulated Üsküdar Üniversitesi for its impressive manifesto.

Emphasis on the importance of global wisdom values

The manifesto stated that reduced social interactions during the pandemic increased the need for secure attachment; and that anxiety about the future and constantly facing death heightened people's fears. It declared: “Therefore, we want to emphasize the importance of giving more weight to global wisdom values in the 21st century and considering them in health, culture, and education policies.” 

Manifesto shared with 589 universities

The aforementioned manifesto, signed by Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, was sent to 589 universities worldwide, including some of the world's most prestigious universities such as Oxford, Harvard, and Yale.
Congratulatory messages poured in for the manifesto from the world's most important universities such as Manchester and Stanford. Global support was given to Üsküdar Üniversitesi's call.

Congratulatory messages poured in

In the message sent to Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan by Megan Swezey Fogarty, Vice President for Community Engagement at Stanford University, it was stated: “On behalf of the University, we thank you for sending your manifesto and share your commitment to civic education as part of higher education.”

Anders Hagström from ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, in his message, stated: “Dear Professor Tarhan, thank you for sharing the 'Post-Pandemic Well-being Manifesto' with us, and we congratulate the Üsküdar Üniversitesi Senate for this impressive statement.” 

Roz Dutton, Vice-President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, said in her message to Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Thank you for sharing this manifesto with us. We extend our best wishes to you and your entire community.”

“We share your desire to create a peaceful and just world.”

In the message sent by Sarah Lines, Executive Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Otago, New Zealand, she conveyed her gratitude on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor's Office, stating: “We share your desire to create a more peaceful, more sustainable, more just, and more livable world.”
