They Penned 'Gender and Media Perception'

Under the editorship of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aylin Tutgun Ünal, the book ‘Gender and Media Perception’ has taken its place on the shelves. Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who penned the book's introductory article, stated that it is a serious reference book, offering a holistic perspective on both gender and how the media should address it. Tarhan said; “There is much talk about this, but for example, we don't know what we understand by gender, and in this regard, we often encounter many differences in perception versus differences in fact in the media.”

The work, comprising contributions from many expert authors from various disciplines, was published by DER Yayınları.

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We don't know what we understand by gender”

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, noting that the book ‘Gender and Media Perception’ is a serious reference book providing a holistic perspective on both gender and how the media should address it, stated; “Under the coordination of Aylin Hoca, the book ‘Gender and Media Perception’ is a much-needed and important study. It addresses a significant need and fills a large gap. There is much talk about this, but for example, we don't know what we understand by gender, and in this regard, we often encounter many differences in perception versus differences in fact in the media. Perceptions are different, facts are different. As clinicians within these facts, we addressed this issue with academics in the media. We have professional groups among us, including physicians, psychiatrists, communicators, and sociologists. I believe it is a serious reference book, with all of them offering a holistic perspective on both gender and how the media should address it.”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aylin Tutgun Ünal: “There was a need to conceptually frame the topic”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aylin Tutgun Ünal, stating that the book consists of entirely unique chapters, provided information about its content. Ünal said; “We can say that it was created with the contributions of 15 authors from different disciplines. This study, especially the book ‘Gender and Media Perception’ at Üsküdar Üniversitesi, was very important. There was a need to conceptually frame the topic. We can say that we prepared it to address this need. In the book ‘Gender and Media Perception’, the interaction between gender and media is discussed from sociological and communication perspectives, along with a psychiatric perspective. It covers many topics. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan provided great support, motivation, and contributions to the creation of this book. Thanks to him, we were able to come together. It includes gender roles, the influence of family on these roles and their reflections on children, what is included in alternative media regarding gender, women's platforms in alternative media, anti-discrimination media policies, and even a chapter we can call original: 'Female Jealousy or Cinderella'. Our book consists of unique chapters. There is the way suicide news is presented in the media, gender aspects in the field of health, for example, we addressed the differences between women and men in new-generation digital diseases like Cyberchondria. The book also includes women's perceptions of beauty and body image on new media platforms, and even gender roles in animations and cartoons, which we included from a communication perspective. Therefore, we can say that it consists of multi-dimensionally addressed original content and chapters.”

It is observed that some sections of the ‘Gender and Media Perception’ book are supported by QR codes. In the book’s preface, which begins with conceptual definitions, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan states the following:

“It has become clear that there is a great need for accurate and evidence-based information on these topics. We addressed related issues with 15 experts. We tried to eliminate conceptual confusion. As seen, referring to sex assigned at birth as ‘Biological Sex’, socially assigned sex as ‘Gender’, and sexual preference as ‘Sexual Orientation’ makes the topic more understandable. Science seeks truth with the methodology of ‘questionability and falsifiability’. We have tried to collect our scientific findings on these complex, indoctrinated, and politicized issues. I would like to state that we are open to criticism and feedback.”

The book, published under the editorship of Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aylin Tutgun Ünal, received contributions from Clinical Psychologist Ayşe Şahin, Sociologist Zeynep Merve Türkoğlu, Expert Psychologist İlayda Tüter, Psychiatry Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Önen Ünsalver, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hacer Aker, Asst. Prof. Dr. Yıldıray Kesgin, New Media Specialist Yücel Ekinci, Master's student Halide Nur Karadeniz, Master's student Miray Şengül, Master's student Imane Abahri, Master's student Fatih Emrah Erdoğan, Master's student Burak Altınok, and Master's student Furkan Tarık Aydın.
