Uskudar University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers undergraduate degrees in 8 departments: Philosophy, English Translation and Interpreting, Psychology (English-Turkish), Sociology, Political Science and International Relations (English-Turkish), and History.

Associate Dean Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat noted that the faculty aims to contribute to national and international studies and produce scientific knowledge based on scientific principles, a contemporary and critical perspective, and adherence to human and ethical values. She added, “In addition to theoretical scientific studies, a unique environment for science and practice will continue to be provided through the application opportunities offered to students.”
 

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat, Associate Dean of Uskudar University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, provided information about the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and its education, and evaluated why candidates should choose these departments. 

Undergraduate degrees offered in 8 departments within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat noted that the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHS) offers contemporary education to its students, stating, “The FHS aims for its students to graduate as equipped and entrepreneurial individuals with analytical thinking, developed application and research skills in their areas of expertise, and capable of participating in international platforms. Within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, undergraduate degrees are awarded in 8 departments: Philosophy, English Translation and Interpreting, Psychology, Psychology (English), Sociology, Political Science and International Relations, Political Science and International Relations (English), and History.”

The Faculty's Future Goals and Vision 

Dr. Anarat noted that the faculty aims to contribute to national and international studies and produce scientific knowledge based on scientific principles, a contemporary and critical perspective, and adherence to human and ethical values. She stated, “In addition to theoretical scientific studies, a unique environment for science and practice will continue to be provided through the application opportunities offered to students.”

Individuals who are proficient in world and Türkiye's affairs are aimed for

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat also provided the following information regarding the departments and why students should choose them:
“In the Philosophy department, skills such as questioning, critical thinking, analysis, and self-awareness are acquired. Graduates can work as guidance counselors in educational and health institutions, research assistants in universities, philosophical consultants, and in areas such as media and publishing. The English Translation and Interpreting department aims to equip students with the necessary skills and proficiency to perform effective translation between English and Turkish. In the Psychology department, clinical experiences following academic education strengthen the ability to dynamically apply acquired knowledge. The Political Science and International Relations department aims to raise individuals who are proficient in world and Türkiye's affairs, possess foreign language skills, and can think analytically. The Sociology department aims to produce graduates who can contribute to the healthy course of social life and analyze events and phenomena with a critical perspective. In the History department, the goal is to train historians who aim to reach objective knowledge of the past.”

Why Psychology?

Providing information about the Psychology Department, Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat stated that the department offers students rich career opportunities and the chance to specialize in various fields. Anarat noted that the reasons for choosing the department include a rich academic staff specializing in different areas of psychology, master's and doctoral programs in psychology within the university, and practical internship opportunities at NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi and polyclinics. She also mentioned the opportunity for experience in neuroscience and positive psychology application laboratories, extensive major and minor options, and a wide pool of elective courses.

Career Opportunities in Psychology

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat stated that Psychology graduates have a wide range of employment opportunities in both public and private sectors. She said, “They can specialize in various sub-fields by pursuing master's degrees. Psychologists can work in hospitals, polyclinics, mental health centers, rehabilitation centers, family health centers, courthouses, prisons, non-governmental organizations, daycares, human resources departments of companies, the advertising industry, sports teams, and schools. Furthermore, they are employed in various ministries such as the Ministry of Health, Ministry of National Education, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Family and Social Policies, and the Ministry of Interior. They also have the opportunity to conduct academic research in universities and institutes.” 

Political Science and International Relations Program

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat explained that the Political Science and International Relations department provides students with an interdisciplinary perspective and the ability to connect theoretical knowledge with practical events. She stated, “Political Science and International Relations is a field of study that examines power relations and focuses on the analysis of political, economic, and socio-cultural relationships between states and other global actors. The origins and implications of political, economic, and socio-cultural developments within global and national frameworks are addressed, and new fields such as political psychology, neuropolitics, and biopolitics are examined. Topics such as the functioning of the international system, law, and organizations, security issues, terrorism, war, peace, conflict resolution, and mediation are covered.”

Graduates can undertake important roles in many sectors

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat also stated that graduates can work in foreign policy and diplomacy, administrative judiciary, public institutions and organizations, private companies, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, research centers, media, and research companies. She added that individuals graduating from these departments can take on important roles in many sectors thanks to their interdisciplinary knowledge.

Why the Philosophy department?

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat stated that the Philosophy department provides skills such as critical thinking, analysis, and self-awareness. She noted that courses like Ancient Philosophy, Medieval Philosophy, Modern Philosophy, Contemporary Philosophy Movements, Introduction to Philosophy, Critical Thinking, Logic, Philosophy of Knowledge, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Religion, Ontology, Ethics, Political Philosophy, and Philosophy of Art are offered. Additionally, there are elective courses covering current topics such as World Problems and Philosophy, Environmental Philosophy, Bioethics, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy and Gender, Philosophy and Identity, Literature and Philosophy, and Cinema and Philosophy.

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat also mentioned that graduates can become academics in universities by pursuing master's and doctoral degrees, work as philosophy group teachers in high schools, guidance counselors and educational consultants in educational institutions, philosophical consultants in various companies, and as editors, writers, critics, and advertisers in press and publishing organizations and publishing houses.

History department offers an innovative education program

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat stated that Uskudar University's History department also offers an innovative education program aimed at providing students with broad and in-depth historical knowledge. She explained that the department includes courses such as Ottoman and Turkish history, European history, and world history, and also offers courses that develop fundamental skills like historical methodology, archival studies, historical analysis, and critical thinking.
Dr. Anarat mentioned that graduates have a wide range of career opportunities, including teaching, research, archival work, museology, editing, diplomacy, journalism, and working in publishing houses. She added, “Our vision is for our students to become leaders who will make a difference in the field of history or other areas after graduation.”

Sociology department adopts an interdisciplinary holistic perspective

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat also highlighted that the Sociology department develops students' abilities to understand, interpret, and produce solutions for social events. She stated that graduates can work in public institutions, non-governmental organizations, municipalities, and research companies, and can pursue teaching and academic careers.

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat noted that Uskudar University's Sociology department adopts an interdisciplinary holistic perspective, stating, “Elective courses such as sociology of gender, sociology of education, cultural theories, sociology of art, daily life and cinema, sociology of disability, and political sociology enable students to focus on current sociological issues. In the curriculum, in addition to basic sociology courses, courses required for philosophy group teaching certification are also available as electives. Students who wish to receive pedagogical training can take these training courses integrated into the sociology curriculum.” 

English Translation and Interpreting department also offers advanced education in Spanish, German, and Russian

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat stated that the English Translation and Interpreting department develops students' theoretical and practical translation skills, and provides knowledge and skills to translate in various fields such as medicine, law, economics, and literature. She said, “In addition to English, we prepare our students better for the sector by offering advanced education in languages such as Spanish, German, and Russian. Furthermore, our academically successful students can apply for minor and double major education in Psychology, Political Science and International Relations, Sociology, History departments, and many departments of the Faculty of Communication such as Journalism, Radio, Television and Cinema, and Advertising, and can graduate with a double diploma or a minor certificate.”

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat explained that students who wish can broaden their career fields by taking some important courses from English Language Teaching departments as electives, and can also step into the English language teaching profession upon graduation or during their studies.

Dr. Lecturer Elif Kurtuluş Anarat also stated that Uskudar University offers a wide range of scholarship opportunities to students.
