Experts warn about “vampire power”!

Turning off unused devices is shown as the main element and easiest method of saving. Experts state that devices waiting in ‘standby’ or ready mode are among the primary causes of increased electricity bills, and A.C adapters not connected to any device continue to draw power when plugged in, negatively affecting the bill. Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker points out that a plugged-in adapter is also called “vampire power,” emphasizing that standby power is used in computers, televisions, and battery charging, and 5% of electricity bills are due to devices in standby mode.

“5% of electricity bills are due to standby devices!”

Unused devices must be turned off!

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker, Head of the English Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, shared important information about the effects of devices operating in standby mode on electricity bills.

Vampire power continuously consumes electricity

Emphasizing that turning off unused devices is the easiest method as the main principle of saving, Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker said, “The devices that increase bills the most are those in standby or ready mode, and A.C adapters that charge many portable devices. If plugged into an outlet, the adapter continues to draw power even if no devices are connected to it. This power consumption continues even while we sleep. Because the tips of a plugged-in adapter resemble a vampire's teeth, it is called ‘Vampire Power.’”

5% of the bill belongs to standby devices

Stating that devices in standby mode display certain information such as temperature and time, Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker, Head of the English Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, warned, “Standby power is used in battery charging, microwave ovens, DVDs, televisions, remote controls, and computers. Therefore, devices, which number up to 40 in an average home, use standby power when they are not in active operation. Approximately 5% of the electricity bill comes from these devices in standby mode.”
