Üsküdar Üniversitesi Vocational School of Health Services (SHMYO) and Career Center Department organized the event “Career Panel in Health: Professional Life in Health Professions from the Perspective of Sector Representatives.” At the event, career opportunities in the field of health, the importance of occupational health and safety, and the place of orthotics-prosthetics technician in the healthcare system were discussed. The event highlighted topics such as fundamental precautions to be taken in occupational safety, rules to be observed in laboratory and workshop environments, and the vital role of correct chemical labeling.

The event, held at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Çarşı Campus, was moderated by SMHYO Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Program Head, Lecturer Kübra Akkalay, and Career Center Sector Collaborations Assistant Manager Semra Gül.

Anadolu Orthopedics Prosthetics and Orthotics Technician Ecenaz Koca and Healty and Safety OHS Specialist B Yiğit Gül attended the program as speakers.

Yiğit Gül: “OHS is not just a legal obligation…”

Healty and Safety OHS Specialist B Yiğit Gül delivered his speech within the scope of the program. Gül stated that he has been working in the field of occupational health and safety for over 10 years and emphasized that their primary goals are the protection of employees, employers, and the work environment. Gül stated; “Occupational health and safety is not just a legal obligation, but a responsibility to protect human life.”

“A small negligence can lead to serious accidents”

Gül, addressing the vital importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE) in laboratory and workshop environments, stated; “In a laboratory environment, long hair should not be left open, closed-toe shoes should be preferred, and gloves and safety glasses should be used. A small negligence can lead to serious accidents. Not panicking and quickly raising an alarm while ensuring your personal safety is the most critical step.” he said.

“The most important thing is correct labeling”

Yiğit Gül, emphasizing the importance of correct labeling, said; “All the chemicals you use have separate functions. Each one also carries separate risks. If a reaction arising from the combination of two flammable and corrosive substances is caused by ignorance, it can lead to a fire. That’s why the most important thing here is correct labeling and knowing the information on the material we use well.” he stated.

Ecenaz Koca: “We are a healthcare institution that builds a bridge between patients and hospitals”

In her speech, Ecenaz Koca, a graduate of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Orthotics and Prosthetics Program and Anadolu Orthopedics Prosthetics and Orthotics Technician, highlighted the role of orthotics-prosthetics technicians in the healthcare system; “We are a healthcare institution that builds a bridge between patients and hospitals. We produce orthoses and prostheses for patients who experience limb loss either congenitally or subsequently.” she stated.

“We must be very careful while working”

Ecenaz Koca, emphasizing occupational health and safety, underlined the rules to be observed in workshop activities, stating; “Wearing a uniform is mandatory in the workshop environment; working with a shawl or white apron is not allowed. We must be very careful while working. We can unintentionally cause serious accidents.” she said.
The event, which attracted great interest, concluded after a Q&A session.
