An event titled “Energy Efficiency and Sustainability” was organized by Üsküdar Üniversitesi Vocational School of Health Services (SHMYO). Assoc. Prof. Dr. Feride Kulalı Özdek, Head of the Nuclear Technology and Radiation Safety Program at Üsküdar Üniversitesi SHMYO, attended the event. Addressing the individual, societal, and ethical dimensions of energy efficiency, Özdek emphasized that energy efficiency is not merely a technical issue, but an area of responsibility towards future generations. Özdek also stated that energy efficiency is not a choice, but a necessity.

Dr. Ömer Faruk Karasakal, Director of SHMYO, and faculty members attended the online event.

Energy efficiency is not a choice, but a necessity!
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Feride Kulalı Özdek stated that energy efficiency has critical importance in all areas today: “Energy is one of the fundamental building blocks of modern life, but how we use energy directly affects the future of both the planet and all living beings. Global energy demand is rapidly increasing. Our resources are not limitless, and this situation makes energy efficiency a necessity rather than a choice. Today, energy efficiency is not merely a technical issue; it is an area directly related to social welfare, economic sustainability, and environmental balance.”
An area of ethical responsibility…
Emphasizing the importance of renewable energy sources, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Feride Kulalı Özdek stated that the environmental impacts of these sources should not be overlooked. Özdek said: “Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal have much lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels. However, these sources also involve the use of energy and natural areas during their production, installation, and operation processes. We cannot ignore planning and efficiency principles when shifting towards renewable energy. When we use energy less and more efficiently, we not only reduce our own carbon footprint; we also protect the habitats of living beings who share this planet with us. Therefore, energy efficiency is part of humanity's ethical responsibility towards nature and other living beings.”
The program concluded with the participants' thanks.
