Emergency and Disaster Management Students Inspect Fire Department Up Close

Students from Üsküdar Üniversitesi Vocational School of Health Services (SHMYO) Emergency and Disaster Management Program organized a technical trip to Kadıköy Fire Department. Meeting with professionals in the field, students had the opportunity to closely observe the working environment of these life-saving heroes. They also received detailed information about special equipment used in firefighting, rescue, and first aid, as well as special clothing called 'Nomex'.  

The technical trip, attended by 1st and 2nd-year students of the Emergency and Disaster Management Program, took place at Kadıköy Fire Station. 

The event was also attended by Assistant Director of SHMYO and Head of the Emergency and Disaster Management Program, Lecturer Esad Sadık Demirtaş.

Under the guidance of Lecturer Osman Grant, students met with professionals in the field and had the opportunity to closely observe the working environment of these life-saving heroes. During the visit, they also experienced firsthand the challenges and intricacies of the firefighting profession.

Lecturer Osman Grant: “The firefighting duty can also be considered 'semi-military'”

Emphasizing that firefighters work eighty hours more than other professions, Lecturer Osman Grant shared with the students in detail the 24-hour shift cycle of firefighters and their operational life within the station. Grant also stated that the firefighting duty can be considered 'semi-military'.

The Importance of Routine and Discipline Emphasized

During the technical trip, the importance of routine and discipline at the station was first emphasized. Afterwards, students were explained how a fire department is organized and what procedures are applied in emergencies, and their living quarters were toured.

Subsequently, students received information about different types of fire trucks. The technical specifications, capacities, and situations in which these vehicles are used were explained in detail. 

Special equipment used in firefighting, rescue, and first aid, as well as special clothing called ‘Nomex’, were introduced to the students.

The technical trip concluded with a group photo session.
