An event titled ‘Sociology of Everyday Life’ was organized with the contributions of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Sociology, and the Sociology Club. Held at Üsküdar Üniversitesi South Campus Socrates Hall, the event saw full participation from Department of Sociology academicians and was followed with great interest by students.
The documentary film “Sick,” directed by Michael Moore, was watched with great interest at the event titled ‘Sociology of Everyday Life.’ Delivering the opening speech of the event, Prof. Dr. Barış Erdoğan, Head of the Sociology Department at Üsküdar Üniversitesi, introduced the documentary and emphasized that social relations are highly effective in health and illness, as much as psychological, economic, and political aspects.
“An inclusive right to health, encompassing human values, should be provided”
Prof. Dr. Barış Erdoğan made statements about the ‘Sick’ documentary, touching upon the importance of the right to health. Erdoğan stated, “The documentary presents striking examples comparing the neo-liberal health system implemented in the USA with the social health systems in various European countries and the socialist health system in Cuba. In this context, an egalitarian, just, and inclusive right to health, oriented towards human values, should be provided within a societal framework.”
“Living in a system that values and prioritizes people is sufficient”
Prof. Dr. Barış Erdoğan emphasized that health is an important area within the scope indicated by the documentary, and said, “To be happy and healthy, it is not necessary to live in an economically rich country. It is sufficient to live in a system that values and prioritizes people.”
At the end of the event, Prof. Dr. Erdoğan thanked the participants and stated that they eagerly await suggestions from students for the selection of future documentaries and films.
