Prof. Dr. Barış Erdoğan: “Complex factors causing crime should be examined”

After the screening of the documentary 'My Slum Story,' Prof. Dr. Erdoğan, Head of the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, introduced the documentary and emphasized that psychological, sociological, economic, and political aspects are effective in the emergence of crime. Erdoğan stated; “Psychological, sociological, economic, and political aspects are effective in the emergence of crime. We observed that crime constitutes one of the factors shaping the social structure in a functional and interactionist context. Therefore, the multidimensional and complex factors causing crime need to be examined in depth. The prevention of crime can only be achieved by moving beyond pragmatic and subjective approaches.”

At the end of the event, where graduate and undergraduate students also exchanged ideas, Prof. Dr. Barış Erdoğan said; “We eagerly await suggestions from students for the selection of future documentaries and films.”

Res. Asst. Berat Dağ: “Crime can be seen as necessary for political reasons”

Research Assistant Berat Dağ from the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences emphasized the importance of Thomas's Theorem. Dağ stated; “From a Durkheimian perspective, crime can be seen as necessary and useful for certain political reasons in defining and legitimizing normative boundaries. Labeling an individual as a criminal can, over time, lead that individual to internalize criminality.”

The event concluded after a group photo session.
