The “October Scientific Meeting” was held in collaboration with the Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Health Sciences Perfusion Department and the Perfusion Club, affiliated with the Department of Health, Culture and Sports (SKS). During the meeting, modern systems used in the field of perfusion and practical experiences were shared. The contributions of mini extracorporeal circulation systems to patient recovery, the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork, and the vital support provided by the ECMO device in emergency situations were explained with examples.

The meeting was held at the Ibn Sina Auditorium of Üsküdar Üniversitesi NP Health Campus.

The event was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ali Kocailik, Head of the Perfusion Department at the Faculty of Health Sciences, and Prof. Dr. Denyan Mansuroğlu, Cardiovascular Surgery Specialist at Yeni Yüzyıl University Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital.

Perf. Muhammed Cavcav, Perf. Ali Akkan, and Perf. Zeynep Averbek Arslan participated as speakers in the event, while Perf. Mustafa Erkan, Perf. Tarık Demir, and Perf. İsmail Yerli took part as panelists.

Hybrid approaches in challenging cases were discussed

The meeting began with an online ELSO webinar. Mirko Belliato moderated the event, which focused on postcardiotomy ECMO applications.

Silvia Mariani presented on ECMO indications and intensive care management, while Anne Schaefer shared hybrid approaches and case presentations in challenging cases. Participants learned that ECMO requires multidisciplinary teamwork and highlighted the importance of timely decision-making.

Perf. Muhammed Cavcav: “We are successfully using this system”

Perf. Muhammed Cavcav delivered his presentation titled “First Case of Midcab with MIECC in Turkey”. Cavcav stated: “MIECC, or mini extracorporeal circulation system, as a closed bypass method, accelerates patients' recovery process, reduces the risk of infection, and shortens hospital stays. In this system, due to less blood contact with surfaces outside the body, bleeding and hemodilution are reduced, liver functions are preserved, and patients can return to their normal lives more quickly. We successfully use this system in our clinic for aortic valve, mitral valve, and tricuspid valve surgeries. We are achieving more efficient results every day.”

Perf. Ali Akkan: “Multidisciplinary collaboration is very important”

Perf. Ali Akkan gave his presentation titled “Postoperative Cardiac Arrest and ECMO Support After CABG”. Akkan said: “This is the S5 device we use. There was also a multidisciplinary collaboration here. This collaboration is very important. Neither perfusion nor anesthesia nor surgery can do it alone. While the anesthesia team managed ventilation and medication, as the perfusion team, we ensured circulation and oxygenation. The surgical team managed the most critical steps of the process with rapid cannulation and correct equipment selection.”

Perf. Zeynep Avarberk Arslan: “Circulation and oxygen support provided with ECMO”

Perf. Zeynep Avarberk Arslan delivered her presentation titled “Foreign Body Removal from Trachea with ECMO Support”. Arslan said: “We used an ECMO device to provide heart and lung support to our patient. As it was an emergency, we established connections from the heart and major vessels. We provided blood circulation and oxygenation through the device. Initially, we gave the patient full oxygen support, gradually reducing it as their condition improved. We used a special medication to prevent blood clotting and regularly monitored its values. This ensured that blood circulation and oxygen levels were kept stable throughout the procedure.”

Following the presentations, a Q&A session was held. Participants stated that the event strengthened knowledge sharing in the field of perfusion.
The meeting concluded after a group photo session.
