Correct Use of Upper Extremity Orthoses Discussed

The “Ready-Made Upper Extremity Orthosis Products” event was organized by the Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (SHMYO) Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Program. At the event, the anatomical compatibility, muscle-relaxing properties due to heat effect, and stabilizing roles in fracture cases of many products, from neck braces to shoulder supports, were practically discussed. The guest of the event was Orthotist Prosthetist Selçuk Sunar. Sunar emphasized that providing proper usage training makes a professional difference and shared his industry experiences with the students.

The event, held at Üsküdar University Çarşı campus, was moderated by Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Program Head Instructor Kübra Akkalay. Current prosthetic and orthotic products used in the industry were introduced within the scope of the event.

Drew Attention to the Usage Areas and Technical Specifications of the Products

Orthotist Prosthetist Selçuk Sunar, who met with students of the Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Program, explained the differences between neck braces and drew attention to the importance of the curve in neck anatomy. Sunar stated that some orthoses are not only protective but also increase blood circulation and relax muscles with the warming effect they provide, and shared the information that the devices known as 'posture correctors' are actually designed for clavicle fractures. 

He also shared with the students the working principles of screw systems used in humerus fractures and functional devices that support the wrist in radial nerve injuries.

“Providing Proper Usage Training Makes a Professional Difference”

Sunar, also conveying his industry experiences, emphasized that merely fitting the products is not enough, and providing patients with correct usage training in front of a mirror makes a professional difference. He also underlined the importance of quality details such as internal materials like terry cloth used in products to prevent sweating and protect skin health.
