The speed and intensity of modern life lead many people to prefer eating out as a practical solution. Experts emphasize that constantly relying on outside food, due to its high salt, sugar, and fat content, paves the way for serious health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. In contrast, home-cooked meals offer advantages in terms of both ingredient control and portion management.

Highlighting the importance of balancing eating out with home-cooked meals for a healthy diet, Nutrition Specialist Instructor Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu said: “Eating out once or twice a week, as long as the right choices are made and portion control is observed, does not pose a problem for a healthy lifestyle.”

Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu, Instructor at Üsküdar University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, evaluated the long-term effects of constantly eating out on health.

Constantly eating out negatively affects health

Pointing out that eating out regularly generally has negative effects on health due to its high salt, sugar, and fat content, Instructor Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu said: “Restaurants use more of these ingredients to make meals tastier, which increases calorie intake. In the long run, excessive consumption of salt and fat can lead to health problems such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. In addition, depending on their content, meals prepared outside may have lower nutritional value. Therefore, constantly eating out may also cause vitamin and mineral deficiencies in the body.”

No harm in eating out with healthy food choices

However, Instructor Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu also stated that eating out can positively contribute to a healthy diet if healthy food choices are made: “With the right choice of restaurant, portion control, and avoiding processed foods high in salt and sugar, it is possible to maintain a healthy diet while eating out. In this way, a person can both manage their appetite and feel good socially.”

What are the health advantages of home-cooked meals?

Emphasizing that home-cooked meals offer significant advantages in terms of healthy nutrition, Instructor Hatunoğlu continued: “First of all, home-cooked meals are usually prepared with fresh and unprocessed ingredients. This helps preserve the nutritional value of the meals. Vegetables, meats, and whole grains are the main components of home-cooked meals, and they provide the body with essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. As a result, the digestive system functions properly, the immune system is strengthened, and overall health improves.”

Control of fat and salt in home cooking

Hatunoğlu also noted that one of the greatest advantages of home cooking is the ability to completely control the ingredients: “The amount of salt, fat, and sugar used in the kitchen can be adjusted, which plays an important role in managing diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes. For example, in home-cooked meals, it is possible to reduce the amount of fat and use natural spices instead of salt. This makes meals healthier.”

Portion control through home cooking

Highlighting that preparing meals at home also provides great benefits in terms of portion control, Instructor Hatice Nurseda Hatunoğlu said: “Portions in restaurants or outside meals are generally large and can lead to high calorie intake. However, when cooking at home, portions can be adjusted according to personal needs, helping to ensure a balanced diet. In addition, cooking at home is often more advantageous economically as well.”
