Conference on “TİHEK as a National Human Rights Institution” Held at Üsküdar University

An informative conference on “TİHEK as a National Human Rights Institution” was held by Üsküdar Üniversitesi's Human Rights Studies Application and Research Center and the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey (TİHEK). TİHEK Specialist Dr. Ertuğrul Yazar and TİHEK Vice President Attorney Yılmaz Bölükbaşı attended the online conference as speakers.

Students showed great interest in the conference, which was moderated by Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı, Director of Üsküdar University's Human Rights Studies Application and Research Center (İHAMER) and Head of the Sociology Department.

TİHEK Specialist Dr. Ertuğrul Yazar, who participated in the conference as a speaker, began his speech by first discussing the historical development, duties, and powers of national human rights institutions. He then spoke about TİHEK’s founding purpose, its legislation, duties, and powers, as well as the institution’s three main duties: the protection and development of human rights, the national prevention mechanism, and combating discrimination and promoting equality. Yazar stated, “TİHEK carries out numerous activities within the scope of its duties and powers and contributes to the work done in its field of responsibility.”

Within this scope, Dr. Yazar spoke about the visits made as part of the national prevention mechanism, stating that they examined numerous cases that created public resonance, and provided examples from international symposiums, national workshops and meetings, individual application decisions, and training sessions. Furthermore, Yazar stated that they participated in and contributed to numerous events of their national and international stakeholders, and underlined that Üsküdar University holds a very important place among these stakeholders.

Subsequently, TİHEK Vice President Attorney Yılmaz Bölükbaşı, who took the floor, stated that TİHEK is an important institution in the field of human rights in Turkey and highlighted that awareness-raising activities in the field of human rights have increased through joint efforts carried out with stakeholders like Üsküdar University.

In the final section of the conference, which was attended by students from Üsküdar University’s Sociology Department and Molecular Biology and Genetics Department, Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı thanked the speakers for their participation and shared the information that Üsküdar University, together with TİHEK, would continue its awareness and information activities in the field of human rights.
