Dr. Tuğba Kaman, Lecturer at Üsküdar University Health Services Vocational School (SHMYO) Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Program, virtually attended the “Climate Change Summit” organized in Azerbaijan by Azerbaijan Technical University, Bahçeşehir University, and Bilim Sen Ol Platform. Kaman gave a presentation titled “Effects of Climate Change on Plant Biodiversity.”

Dr. Tuğba Kaman, Lecturer at the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Program, who attended the summit online, gave a presentation titled “Effects of Climate Change on Plant Biodiversity.”
Climate change threatens plant species, reducing biodiversity
In her presentation, Kaman emphasized that plant biodiversity is vital for the health and sustainability of the ecosystem, stating that climate change threatens plant species, thereby reducing biodiversity. Kaman also highlighted that this situation could disrupt the ecosystem's balance and affect relationships within the food chain.
“Plant species with narrow distributions face the threat of extinction”
Dr. Tuğba Kaman stated that irregularity could reduce productivity. Kaman said; “Extreme heat, drought, and irregular rainfall negatively affect plant growth. This situation can reduce productivity in agricultural products. Especially plant species with narrow distributions may face the threat of extinction due to climate change. The reduction and degradation of forests decrease carbon storage capacity…” she added.
“Awareness training contributes to the enlightenment of societies”
Emphasizing the importance of implementing climate change-resilient practices, Kaman said; “Developing climate change-resilient plant species in agriculture, creating protected areas for threatened species, restoring degraded ecosystems, and preserving soil health through organic farming are important. Saving water with sustainable irrigation and promoting polyculture practices are also effective methods. Awareness training on these issues contributes to the enlightenment of individuals and societies. With correct strategies, the negative impacts of climate change can be reduced,” she stated.
Global Importance of Climate Change and Plant Biodiversity Addressed
In her presentation, Kaman drew attention to the global importance of climate change and plant biodiversity, stating that governments should develop comprehensive policies to cope with climate change and that international cooperation would support the protection of ecosystems. Kaman said that this situation is important for both sustainability and human welfare.
