Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (VSHS) Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Program organized an event titled "Prosthetic Orthotics Case Examples and Applications within the Scope of April 30 Prosthetics and Orthotics Day". Prosthetic Orthotics Technician Güneş Ecenaz Koca attended the event as a speaker. Koca underlined that being able to give positive results to the patient is the greatest satisfaction.

The event took place at Üsküdar University Çarşı Campus.
Prosthetic Orthotics Technician Güneş Ecenaz Koca was the guest of the event titled "Prosthetic Orthotics Case Examples and Applications within the Scope of April 30 Prosthetics and Orthotics Day". The event was moderated by Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (VSHS) Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Program Head Instructor Kübra Akkalay.

Güneş Ecenaz Koca: "Contracture is called restricted mobility in a joint"
Prosthetic Orthotics Technician Güneş Ecenaz Koca talked about case examples within the scope of the event. Koca stated that "Contracture is called restricted mobility in a joint and usually occurs in joints such as the knee or arm. In this ailment, the joint cannot be fully opened. For example, it is not possible to open the knee, no matter how many people come together, the knee or arm may break instead of opening. Contracture orthoses are used to treat such conditions. In addition, puller mechanisms can be applied in addition to these orthoses. The contracture orthosis used for the elbow is in the form of an articulated splint. For the knee, an orthosis called a KAFO is used. A similarly articulated orthosis can be used on the ankle. The ankle joint and puller mechanism are caused by the patient's foot remaining in the plantar flexion position. This can cause limitation in the foot, which can occur due to the shortness of the Achilles tendon or tension of any tendon. However, such limitations can be seen even if there is no tendon shortness. By using a puller joint in the ankle, the movement of the foot can be brought up to 90 degrees. In cases of contracture, it is possible to open the movement in the joint with the help of a key from the outside. When the key is turned, it can be possible to easily open the patient's knee or elbow up to 180 degrees."

“We apply the 3-point principle in the treatment of scoliosis"
Explaining how scoliosis treatment is done, Koca said that "We apply the 3-point principle in the treatment of scoliosis. However, there are some points that you should pay attention to when applying this principle. First, the apex is located in the lumbar region. That is, it usually begins around the junction of the thoracic and lumbar regions. After determining this point, you need to determine the other two points from the thoracic region and the crystal region, respectively. In this way, you can correct the patient correctly. Think of your hand as a dough. How can you shape your hand? This can actually be thought of with simple logic. In the corset, you need to pull the body to the other side, while pushing the waist part inward. We determine how to do this by taking a plaster measure. When you take plaster measurements, you get a negative model. By working on this model, you can bring the spine to 180 degrees."

"Your priority should be to provide a solution to the patient"
Stating that producing solutions is the greatest source of satisfaction, Koca concluded her remarks as follows: "Doing orthotics and prosthetics is not just about knowing the products or sticking to this list. Because you will also encounter abnormal patients. For example, a flatfoot patient can come every day, but when you encounter one special situation, will you be able to make that product? If you can make such products and offer solutions to the patient, you will stand out from other companies. This will take you very far professionally. The most important thing is that you can satisfy yourself. You will be able to say, 'I solved this patient's problem, I helped him, I healed him.' The important thing here is not just to make money or to produce a product. Your priority should be to offer a solution to the patient and to give him results. This will be the greatest source of success and satisfaction for you."
The event ended after the participants' questions were answered.
