Caring for patients gives them a sense of trust…

Graduates of the Üsküdar Üniversitesi Vocational School of Health Services (VSHS) Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Department met with current students. Selçuk Sunar and Güneş Ecenaz Koca, graduates of the Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Department, attended the event as guests.

The event, held at the Çarşı Campus Emir Nebi-2 conference hall, saw high participation.

Selçuk Sunar: “Caring for patients gives them a sense of trust”

Selçuk Sunar, a graduate of the Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Department, offered advice to the participating students: “Patients’ previous conditions should be thoroughly evaluated. We should assess them by asking questions like, ‘Have they had surgery? Have they previously used a Prosthesis or Orthosis?’ Providing accurate information and communicating well with patients is important. Caring for patients and listening to them instills a sense of trust. If we cannot build trust with the patient, they will not use their orthosis or prosthesis.”

Sunar offered various pieces of advice for students: “Volunteer for internships in workshops to gain experience. Beyond craftsmanship, it’s important to have a knack for business. Marketing the prosthesis and orthosis is crucial.”

Güneş Ecenaz Koca: “Our department is a profession requiring patience and craftsmanship”

Güneş Ecenaz Koca, a graduate of the Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Department, emphasized the importance of disciplined and planned work in the workshop: “Our department is a profession that requires patience and craftsmanship. A patient’s weight is crucial for their use of orthoses and prostheses. It must be thoroughly evaluated whether they have any allergic conditions. The patient’s economic situation is also important for the cost of the prosthesis or orthosis to be covered.”

“Patients value aesthetic design”

Regarding the psychological conditions experienced by patients, Koca said: “The situation is a difficult process for patients. Prosthesis patients may or may not accept that they are amputees, meaning they have limb loss. Patients value aesthetic design. The perspective of others and how they look at their bodies affects patients. The approach of family members is important for our patients. This is because some family members may find it more difficult to accept the situation than the patient. In pediatric patients, the family’s approach is an important factor in children accepting their prosthesis or orthosis.”

The event concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the speakers and a group photo session.
