Within the scope of Üsküdar Üniversitesi's University Culture course, a “Career Seminar for Those Taking New Steps into Business Life” was held. The guest of the seminar, organized by the Social Security program of the Vocational School of Health Services, was Serkan Çelik, Human Resources Manager of İstanbul Üniversitesi AUZEF.
“Career encompasses a large part of our lives”
Emphasizing the importance for students to understand what a career is, what it signifies, and how to make conscious career plans, İstanbul Üniversitesi AUZEF Human Resources Manager Serkan Çelik shared his advice with young people on how they should navigate their career lives. Çelik said: “Career covers a significant portion of our lives. Business life falls within this timeframe. On what basis do we make our choices, and how do we decide? These plans are very important. There are some questions in career life. It is necessary to know and question their answers. First, I advise young people to seek the answers to these questions: Who am I? What is work, what does it mean to me? Which job would make me happy? What are my priorities in life? Seeking the answers to these questions is the first stage. After completing their education, families have expectations about working life. By taking a personality inventory, you can objectively find the answer to the question 'Who am I?'. We have specific personality types. These are not variable. A person with a strong analytical side should know the implications of all these in business life. They are interested in numbers and details and can work in accounting departments. The individual needs to analyze which job is suitable for them. It is essential to determine your priorities in your career goals.”
“A different story awaits you”
Çelik, who explained career with examples and shared his knowledge for those taking new steps into business life, said: “It is a word that has found its place in our lives and is frequently heard. Before the industrial revolution, it meant a straightforward path, a journey progressing from apprentice to journeyman. Years later, today, a career transforms into a path with different meanings. Beyond the traditional definition, if we look at the total framework in business life, it encompasses all roles. Where do you see yourself? In response to this question, people used to say, 'I see myself as a manager.' We can transition from a vertical career to a horizontal one. If you are not a doctor or a lawyer, if you are not strictly tied to your profession, it progresses either vertically or horizontally. For young people, the discovery period is a very challenging time, and that age group struggles psychologically. Some young people are now researching and aware because they are conscious and have goals. Others face harsh realities after graduation. Don't let that happen; have your priorities. You can join internship programs. All these things related to discovery require you to gain experience. Develop your network, practice interviews, and explore job search channels. A different story awaits you.”
