Experts, making important warnings about the use of false eyelashes and eyelash curlers, state that the adhesives of false eyelashes, frequently used for impressive looks, can cause allergies in some people, and the strong chemicals within can lead to skin redness, itching, and watery eyes.

Emphasizing that false eyelash adhesives and eyelash curlers can cause microbes to multiply, Lecturer Birgül Erbaş, Head of the Hair Care and Beauty Services Program, said, “False eyelashes and curlers that are not regularly cleaned create a suitable environment for bacteria and fungus growth. This can lead to eye infections, stye formation, and irritation.”

Üsküdar University Health Services Vocational School, Head of Hair Care and Beauty Services Program, Lecturer Birgül Erbaş, made important warnings regarding the use of false eyelashes and eyelash curlers.

False eyelash adhesives can cause allergies

Lecturer Birgül Erbaş stated that false eyelashes and eyelash curlers are frequently used for more defined and impressive looks, saying, “However, incorrect use of these products can harm eye health. False eyelash adhesives can cause allergies in some people. The strong chemicals they contain can lead to skin redness, itching, and watery eyes. Especially for sensitive skin, hypoallergenic products should be preferred and first tested on a small area.”

Incorrect use can cause eye irritation

Lecturer Birgül Erbaş also stated that incorrectly used adhesives can cause eye irritation, infections, and eyelash loss, adding, “Furthermore, incorrect removal can lead to natural eyelashes breaking off. The adhesive should be applied only to the lash line, not inside the eyelid.”

Eyelash curlers are not innocent either!

Erbaş also warned about eyelash curlers, stating, “Pressing too hard can cause eyelashes to break. Using it on made-up lashes can lead to lashes breaking off as mascara hardens. Using it too close to the eyelid can cause the skin to pinch and become irritated. You can minimize the risk of damage by using your eyelash curler gently and on clean eyelashes.”

Sharing the tool with others can lead to eye infections

Lecturer Birgül Erbaş, noting that mascara and dirt accumulated on the eyelash curler produce bacteria, said, “Sharing the tool with others can lead to eye infections. Regularly changing the rubber pad and wiping it after each use is important for hygiene. Cleaning the surface of the curler by wiping it with an alcohol-soaked cotton pad is the best method. False eyelashes should be wiped with an oil-free makeup remover after each use and stored in their own box. Eyelash curlers should be wiped with an alcoholic wipe once a week, and the rubber pad should be regularly replaced.”

False eyelashes and curlers create a suitable environment for bacteria and fungus growth

Lecturer Birgül Erbaş, also stating that false eyelash adhesives and eyelash curlers can cause microbes to multiply, continued:

“False eyelashes and curlers that are not regularly cleaned create a suitable environment for bacteria and fungus growth. This can lead to eye infections, stye formation, and irritation. Continuous use of false eyelashes can lead to weakening, shedding, and thinning of natural eyelashes. Similarly, using an eyelash curler every day can weaken the eyelash structure and cause breakage.”

Protect your eye health!

Lecturer Birgül Erbaş, reminding that to protect eye health, hygiene rules must be observed when using false eyelashes and eyelash curlers, the right products should be chosen, and eyelashes should be regularly cared for, concluded her words by saying, “You can have beautiful and voluminous eyelashes without risking your eye health.”
