“One must know the struggle made to ensure that what was won in war was not lost at the negotiating table.”

Prof. Dr. Bingür Sönmez from Memorial Healthcare Group, who stated that it is necessary to know the Treaty of Lausanne to understand the Republic, said: “On the 100th anniversary of the Treaty of Lausanne, which is the title deed of the Republic of Turkey, I commemorate with mercy and gratitude great Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his comrades-in-arms, our dear martyrs who supported the national struggle materially and morally, gave their lives, and shed their blood. May their souls rest in peace. To understand the Republic, one must know Lausanne. One must know the period before and after the First World War, during which, starting from the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1694, there was continuous loss of land, and significant concessions were made to Western states and Russia through military, political, and economic agreements. One must know what the Armistice of Mondros failed to impose on us; the Armistice of Mudanya, signed after great deceptions regarding the Treaty of Sèvres; how İsmet Paşa challenged the representatives of the Allied Powers regarding a second Sèvres attempted to be imposed on us during the First Lausanne Conference, returning to Ankara and suspending the Lausanne negotiations; and the struggle of the Turkish side to ensure that what was won in war was not lost at the negotiating table.”

In his speech, Prof. Dr. Bingür Sönmez discussed the events that took place in Ankara during Lausanne and made evaluations on the subject.
