An important journal from Üsküdar for mental health and global well-being…

'Journal of Happiness and Well-Being': JHWB has been published.

The importance of mental health in a global context has become even more significant after the pandemic. The World Health Organization has set this year's theme for October 10 World Mental Health Day as 'Make Mental Health & Well-Being a Global Priority'. Üsküdar Üniversitesi, which has been conducting serious studies in the field of Positive Psychology since its establishment and published the 'Global Well-Being Manifesto' in 2021 in this context, has now launched the 'Journal of Happiness and Well-Being' (JHWB) to encourage applied and pragmatic critical analysis of issues related to happiness and psychological well-being. With JHWB, an international scientific journal, the aim is also to contribute to academic interaction.

On October 10, World Mental Health Day, the aim this year is to draw attention to the importance of mental health worldwide. The World Health Organization has set this year's theme as 'Make Mental Health & Well-Being a Global Priority'.

One in eight people experienced mental health problems before the pandemic

According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, before the 2019 pandemic, an estimated one in eight people globally lived with a mental disorder. The WHO also stated that existing services, skills, and funding for mental health were insufficient, emphasizing that they fell far short of what was needed, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

A 25% increase was observed in the first year of the pandemic

The WHO stated that the COVID-19 pandemic created a global crisis for mental health, fueling short- and long-term stresses and impacting the mental health of millions, with an estimated increase of more than 25% in both anxiety and depressive disorders in the first year of the pandemic. According to the WHO, mental health services were severely disrupted during the pandemic, and the treatment gap for mental health issues widened.

The need to strengthen mental health services was emphasized

The World Health Organization pointed out that increasing social and economic inequalities, prolonged conflicts, violence, and public health emergencies affect the entire population, threatening progress towards better well-being. It emphasized that individuals, communities, and governments need to deepen their appreciation and commitment to mental health, and that mental health services must be strengthened to ensure all mental health needs can be met through an accessible, affordable, and quality community-based service and support network.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi had published the Global Well-Being Manifesto

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Senate published the 'Global Well-Being Manifesto' in 2021 for the post-pandemic period. In the manifesto shared with the public on April 22 World Earth Day by Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Founding Rector and Chairman of the Executive Board of Üsküdar Üniversitesi, on behalf of the Üsküdar Üniversitesi Senate, concern was expressed over the general despair caused by the pandemic in our country and around the world. The manifesto stated that the decrease in social relations during the pandemic increased the need for secure attachment; future anxiety and living constantly facing death heightened people's fears, and thus it was emphasized: 'Therefore, we want to highlight the importance of giving more weight to global wisdom values in the 21st century and considering them in health, culture, and education policies'. Anyone who wishes can sign the manifesto, which is also available on the university's website.
