Advice for families before LGS

The 2023 LGS will take place on June 04, 2023. Stressing that families also go through this challenging process every year along with the candidates preparing for the exam, Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş stated that sometimes parents' anxieties are more intense than those of the candidates, and advised, 'The exam is not the center of our lives. Success in the exam does not measure all aspects and characteristics of our child's life. What is important is that our children are physically and mentally healthy and happy. Therefore, instead of being anxious, be a source of comfort for both yourself and your child.'

Make them feel that the exam is not the end of everything

Both candidates and families are excited for the LGS (High School Entrance System) exam, which will take place this weekend. Students are expected to take the exam for 1 million 250 thousand 8th-grade students, but due to the earthquake, students will be exempt from second-semester topics. For the controlled management of excitement and the process in this short time remaining before the exam, Üsküdar Üniversitesi's preference and career counselor, Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş, gave important advice to families.

Don't be anxious, be a source of comfort for yourself and your child

Tözeniş pointed out that sometimes parents' anxieties are more intense than those of the candidates, saying, "We know that every year, families also go through this challenging process along with the candidates preparing for the exam. While the exam alone is a anxiety-inducing situation, preparations, efforts, and expectations can sometimes turn the situation into an even more anxious process. We must not forget that the exam is not the center of our lives. Success in the exam does not measure all aspects and characteristics of our child's life. What is important is that our children are physically and mentally healthy and happy. Therefore, instead of being anxious, be a source of comfort for both yourself and your child."

Make them feel that you trust them and that the exam is not the end of everything

Emphasizing that parents should not be pushy about their own desires, Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş continued her advice as follows:

"Express your thoughts on the dreams they build and the goals they set for themselves to become healthy, happy adults in their later years. However, do not pressure them to do what you want. As parents, make sure to walk with them on this path. Students preparing for the exam will also experience constant changes in their emotional states due to negative thoughts such as 'What if I fail?', 'What if the exam doesn't go as I want?', 'I will waste my family's efforts.' Understand your child's feelings and make them feel or tell them that you trust them and that the exam is not the end of everything."

Their only desire is to know you are by their side, to feel your support

Üsküdar Üniversitesi's preference and career counselor, Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş
concluded her words as follows:

"In this period with little time left until the exam, allow them to take short breaks from intense studying. Create opportunities for them to spend time with friends, go for outdoor walks, watch a movie together, and have conversations unrelated to the exam. These will both relax your child and make them feel your presence. Your children are your most precious ones. In the exams and choices of their lives, their only wish is to know you are by their side and to feel your support."
