2025-YKS registration procedures were completed on September 3, 2025, but hope is not yet lost for candidates who could not achieve their university dreams! The additional placement process, to be held between September 25-30, offers a new opportunity.

Expert Psychological Counselor Özgür Akoğlan, who advises candidates to “Choose departments that match your score and ranking, and have sufficient quotas” when creating a preference list, said, “Rank them from the department you want most to the one you want least. Do not add programs you do not wish to be placed in to the list.”

Özgür Akoğlan, also drawing attention to common mistakes made by candidates, stated, “Avoid writing down departments you failed to get into during the first preference round again. The system will not approve them because your score is insufficient. Instead, develop new strategies. Do not leave the preference process until the last day, and be sure to approve your preferences after entering them into the system. Unapproved preferences are considered invalid.”

Özgür Akoğlan, Expert Psychological Counselor and Manager of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Educational Institutions and Guidance Services, evaluated the important points and strategies that candidates who could not be placed in any program after the first placement should pay attention to during this process.

Preference procedures have started for 2025 – YKS Additional Placement

According to the 2025 YKS results, additional placement procedures for higher education programs for the 2025-2026 academic year have begun. Preferences can be made between September 25-30.

Akoğlan, stating that additional placement is an important opportunity for candidates who could not be placed in a university or did not make a preference in the first placement, said, “Taking the right steps in this process can help you get into your dream department.”

Who Can Make Preferences in the Additional Placement Process?

Özgür Akoğlan listed the candidates eligible for additional preferences as follows:

- Unplaced Candidates: Candidates who could not be placed in any program during central placement can make additional preferences.

- Those Who Made No Preferences: Candidates who did not make preferences during the first preference period can also benefit from this right.

- Those Placed by Special Talent: Candidates placed in a program through a special talent exam can make additional preferences with their central placement scores.

- Those Placed But Not Registered: Candidates who were placed but did not register cannot make additional preferences.

Research Quotas and Scores!

Özgür Akoğlan stated that candidates must conduct detailed quota and score research during the additional placement process, saying, “Examine the quotas; thoroughly review the additional preference quota list published by YÖK. Check last year's base scores and success rankings. In additional placement, you must meet the base score of the program you wish to prefer. If your score is below the base score, you cannot prefer that department.”

Create Your Preference List Strategically

Expert Psychological Counselor Özgür Akoğlan offered the following advice to candidates when creating their preference lists:

“Be Realistic: Choose departments that match your score and ranking, and have sufficient quotas. Rank by Preference: Arrange them from the department you want most to the one you want least. Do not add programs you do not wish to be placed in to the list.

Add Variety: Include both safe and target departments in your list. Focusing only on high-scoring departments may reduce your chances of placement.”

Research Universities and Departments

Akoğlan stated that not only department research but also university and city research are important in the preference process, and explained the points to consider as follows:

“Academic Opportunities: Research the academic facilities, accreditations, double major, and Erasmus opportunities of universities.
Scholarship Opportunities: Examine the scholarship opportunities and reduction conditions of foundation universities. Scholarships can significantly reduce educational costs.
City and Living Conditions: Consider the living conditions, transportation, and accommodation options of the city where the university is located.”

Avoid Mistakes!

Özgür Akoğlan, also drawing attention to common mistakes made by candidates, stated, “Avoid writing down departments you failed to get into during the first preference round again. You may not get in again because your score is insufficient. Instead, develop new strategies. Do not leave the preference process until the last day, and be sure to approve your preferences after entering them into the system. Unapproved preferences are considered invalid.”

Turn Towards Promising Departments

Özgür Akoğlan stated that candidates choosing promising departments would increase their chances of finding employment, adding, “Among these departments, Economics and Administrative Sciences: fields like business, economics, and finance always remain relevant. Engineering: the risk of unemployment is low in areas such as civil, industrial, mechatronics, and computer engineering. Health Sciences: departments like nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and health management are always in demand.”

Get Expert Support

Akoğlan concluded by advising candidates to keep their motivation high and definitely seek support from guidance services or preference counselors, stating, “Get help from university guidance services or preference counselors. Career centers can guide you to make the right choice. Keep your motivation high. Additional placement is a second chance. Do not let your motivation drop to make the most of this opportunity. Do not postpone your dreams. With the right preferences, you can be placed in your dream department. Instead of postponing your dreams, take steps to realize them. By managing the additional placement process correctly, you can increase your chances of being placed in the department you desire. Remember, conscious and planned action is the most important key in this process.”
