Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (SHMYO) Orthopedic Prosthesis and Orthosis program organized an event titled “Lower Extremity Orthosis Products”. Orthotist Prosthetist Selçuk Sunar, a graduate of Üsküdar University SHMYO Orthopedic Prosthesis and Orthosis Program, attended the event as a speaker. Sunar shared his professional knowledge and experience with the students and spoke about his career journey. Emphasizing that accurate measurement and patient-centered application are the most important aspects of this profession, Sunar then explained to the students how orthoses are applied to patients with practical examples.

The event, held at the Çarşı campus, was moderated by Lect. Kübra Akkalay, Head of Üsküdar University SHMYO Orthopedic Prosthesis and Orthosis Program.

Orthotist Prosthetist Selçuk Sunar, speaking about the work carried out in Prosthesis Orthosis centers, said: “I am a graduate of Üsküdar University SHMYO Orthopedic Prosthesis and Orthosis Program. Currently, I am working at my own workplace. There are various career opportunities in the field of prosthetics and orthotics. Working in a workshop as a technician, selling in a store, working in the field as promotional staff, or establishing one's own business in the future are among the options offered by this field. In Prosthesis Orthosis centers, standing frames, aluminum assistive walking products, prostheses, helmets, metal orthoses, chest corsets, pediatric orthoses, scoliosis corsets, insoles, customized postoperative orthoses, ready-made orthoses, and silicone prostheses are prepared and applied to patients. When doing this job, it is very important to work with an experienced and harmonious team, to know the devices and materials used well, to have suitable working and storage areas, and to plan time effectively. Furthermore, selecting the appropriate product for the patient, performing accurate measurements and evaluations, knowledge of raw materials, smooth progression of the production process, careful patient fittings and applications, and correct pricing are indispensable aspects of the job.”




How Orthoses are Applied to Patients Explained with Practical Examples
Afterward, students were provided with practical examples explaining in which situations orthoses such as hallux valgus splint, bunion regulator, various insole applications, metatarsal pad, arch support and wedges, heel pad, cork insole, reflex AFO, dorsiflexion strap, foot guard, night splint, air boot, ROM walker, aircast ankle brace, various types of knee braces, angle-adjustable knee brace, and hip brace are used and how they are applied to patients.

The event concluded after the presentation of certificates of appreciation and a group photo session.
