A Key Method for Coping with Stress: ‘DKBY’

Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (SHMYO) held an event as part of the University Culture course, addressing the topics of “Stress Management Methods” and “Stages of Stress.” The Head of the First and Emergency Aid Program at SHMYO, Lecturer Ayşe Bağlı, attended the event as a guest. Bağlı drew attention to the DKBY method in coping with stress.

“A person initiates a reaction chain to protect themselves”

SHMYO First and Emergency Aid Program Head, Lecturer Ayşe Bağlı, made evaluations regarding stress and stress management. Bağlı stated; “When faced with threats and difficulties, a person initiates a powerful reaction chain to protect themselves. As a result, a situation referred to as fight or flight in psychology arises. If a person believes they can cope with a danger when confronted with it, they stay and fight this danger. However, in a dangerous situation where they believe they cannot cope, they show a tendency to withdraw. The aim here is for the individual to adapt to new conditions.”

“Physical activity is a very effective individual method”

Lecturer Ayşe Bağlı, who talked about methods that enable stress management, said; “Among the methods I will mention for coping with stress, physical activity stands out as a very effective individual method. Breathing exercises, relaxation, massage, proper and healthy nutrition, effective communication skills, developing problem-solving skills, behavioral self-control, extroversion, participation in social, cultural, and sports activities, acquiring hobbies, prayer, worship, and time management are methods we encounter for coping with stress individually. In addition to these, there is a model for managing stress using the initials ‘DKBY’ developed by Braham, which we refer to as; ‘change, accept, let go, manage your lifestyle’.”

An important method for coping with stress: ‘DKBY’

Underlining that physical activity is a very effective individual method, Lecturer Ayşe Bağlı said; “The First Step ‘D’ means Change. It refers to changing a negative situation if it is possible. It is stated that if the negative situation is changed, the stress factor will also be eliminated. The Second Step ‘K’ means Accept. In this step, it means that one will sometimes encounter situations that cannot be changed, and to accept these unchangeable situations without getting angry. The Third Step ‘B’ means Let Go, and this also appears as a powerful method. It relaxes the person emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. The person should know why they need to let go during this process and learn to give up. The Fourth Step ‘Y’ means Manage Your Lifestyle. This involves physical activity, healthy eating, and relaxation practices to combat future stress from today. This step is about preventing negative thoughts and adopting a positive lifestyle.”
