Üsküdar University Scientific Research Community Club (ÜSKÜBAT) organized the “2nd Congress in Every Aspect: Surgery” event. Many physicians and academics specialized in surgery participated in the event, sharing their knowledge and experience with students. Speaking at the opening of the program, Üsküdar University Founding Rector Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that such congresses foster out-of-the-box thinking skills.

Many physicians and academics specialized in their fields, including Üsküdar University Founding Rector Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, and ÜSKÜBAT Club President and Congress President Ömer Faruk Bingül, participated in the two-day event held at the NP Health Campus Ibn Sina Auditorium, sharing their knowledge and experience with students.
Üsküdar University Founding Rector Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan delivered the opening speech of the program.

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “The most important need in science is a sense of curiosity”
Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that these congresses foster out-of-the-box thinking skills, began his speech by saying; “Doing such work in the early years of student life is very valuable. You will see its benefits in the coming years. This congress largely covers the topic of robotic surgery. All of these encompass the future. This is called expectation management: being able to find and manage people's future needs. Having this vision is a praiseworthy act. I congratulate the entire team, the organizing committee, and everyone who contributed. Such congresses bear fruit in the medium to long term. It is beneficial to continue in this manner. These types of congresses foster out-of-the-box thinking. The most important need in science is a sense of curiosity. The feelings of curiosity and wonder are important here. If these feelings exist, a person develops themselves. Along with curiosity and wonder, critical thinking is also necessary. You dream, you get curious. Then you question it, and while doing so, you must act in accordance with scientific methodologies.”

“Only those who surpass themselves can do this…”
Tarhan, talking about the 15 percent rule of innovation; “Being against innovations closes us off to development. In other words, we need to confront it. The thing that threatens us the most is laziness. Therefore, organizing this congress means surpassing yourselves. Only people who surpass themselves do this. Those who don’t spend their time on entertainment do it. For this reason, I congratulate all young friends. There is a 15 percent rule of innovation. If you work for 10 hours, you need to spend 1.5 hours thinking about the work you are doing. If this is the case, you can think new things. You can produce different things.”
“This is the age of evidence”
Tarhan, stating that believing and showing patience are important in breaking down prejudices; “There are prejudices among people. For example, Einstein says, ‘I broke the atom, but I couldn't break prejudices.’ Fighting prejudices is one of the topics that innovative people deal with. Here, it is necessary to determine the goal and strategy well and work diligently. There is an example of this in Edison. When Edison was 67, his workshop burned down. While he thought, ‘It's over, all my labor is lost,’ the next morning he gathered his entire family. He stands in front of his burned workshop. He says, ‘All our mistakes burned down.’ A very interesting perspective. After saying all our mistakes burned, he invented the sound recording device three weeks later. For this, one needs to believe and show patience. You shouldn't expect this in the short term; you will get results in the long term. Here, you must definitely prove the work you do. This is the age of evidence. That is, it is necessary to proceed like Hegel, in the form of thesis, antithesis, synthesis. This is how it should be done. When you apply scientific methodology in accordance with this age, different ideas bear fruit.”

“If your answers are ready, you will advance confidently towards your goal”
Tarhan, stating the importance of walking confidently towards the goal; “In the long term, you will encounter many obstacles. Do not let these make you give up. You need to be prepared against prejudices. That is, if you are innovating, be ready with a shield against prejudices. If your answers are ready, you will advance confidently towards your goal. I congratulate those who contributed to this work done with good intentions and our instructors who supported it. I wish for good teamwork.” He concluded his words.
Ömer Faruk Bingül: “We aim to create an environment that will touch our professional lives”
ÜSKÜBAT Club President and Congress President Ömer Faruk Bingül also delivered a speech at the organized program. Bingül said; “When planning this congress, our aim was not only to organize informative sessions but also to create an environment that would inspire, provoke questions, and touch our professional lives. We will learn to be not just good clinicians, but also physicians who adhere to ethical values and do not forget their human side. I hope this congress will be an experience where our excitement for our profession is renewed and our hopes for the future are strengthened.”
