Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş Ayaz, offering important advice regarding this year's preference process, said, “The closure of second education programs in state universities, reduced quotas in some departments, and newly opened undergraduate and associate degree programs will affect preferences this year.”
Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş Ayaz:
“You can start your first 5 preferences half a success rank above your own, then your middle preferences should be close to and within your success rank, and towards the end, you can complete your list by listing places half a success rank below your own.”
The 2024-YKS results were announced on July 16, 2024, and students will make their official preferences between July 25 and August 02. Üsküdar Üniversitesi Preference and Career Consultant, Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş Ayaz, offered important advice regarding this year's preference process.
Second education programs closed in state universities
Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş Ayaz stated that the general quota, which was 1 million 15 thousand 840 last year, has been determined as 960 thousand 249 this year, adding, “This year, to increase the quality of education programs, second education programs in state universities have been closed. Additionally, quotas in Architecture, Pharmacy, Psychology, Nutrition and Dietetics, and some basic science-specific programs have also been reduced. Departments and programs opened in artificial intelligence, digitalization, and big data fields, in line with the requirements of our age, were also included in the guide.”
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are also among the newly opened departments for the first time
Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş Ayaz pointed out the newly opened 4-year undergraduate programs, which are; Abaza Language and Literature, Industrial Management Engineering, E-Commerce, Public Relations and Marketing Communication, Climate Science and Meteorology Engineering, Robotics and Autonomous Systems Engineering, Cyber Security Engineering, Fisheries Industry Engineering, Data Science and Analytics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
There is also a 2-year Artificial Intelligence Operator program
Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş Ayaz also explained that the newly opened 2-year associate degree programs include Back-End Software Development, Cloud Computing Operations, Big Data Analytics, Front-End Software Development, Court Office Services, Autonomous Systems Technicians, Game Development and Programming, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, Manufacturing Execution Systems Operations, Corporate IT Expertise, Artificial Intelligence Operations, Digital Transformation Electronics, Unmanned Vehicle Technicians, Aircraft Manufacturing Technologies, and added, “Each preference period contains different dynamics, and the tendencies of students who will make preferences vary each year.”
Closed second education programs, reduced quotas in some departments will affect preferences
“The closure of second education programs in state universities, reduced quotas in some departments, and newly opened undergraduate and associate degree programs will also affect preferences this year,” said Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş Ayaz, emphasizing that therefore, creating correct preference lists with experts is crucial for candidates to reach their goals.
Selections should be made based on success rank, not score
Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş Ayaz also emphasized what should be considered when creating preference lists, stating, “Let's make our department/program selections based on success rank, not score. Since the success levels of students taking the exam vary each year, success ranks provide us with more accurate comparisons than scores.”
When creating your list, start with the departments you desire most!
Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş Ayaz also stated that the preference list should be created taking into account the closed second education programs and reduced quotas, as well as the quota changes in the departments to be preferred, and informed, “Although YKS is a ranking exam, we make our preferences according to our wishes. When creating your list, you can start with the departments you desire most. This year, especially, create your preferences by keeping your success rank in a wide range. You can start your first 5 preferences half a success rank above your own, then your mid-range preferences should be close to and within your success rank (preferences between 6-20), and towards the end (preferences between 20-24), you can complete your list by listing places half a success rank below your own.”
Attention: To prevent the secondary education achievement score from dropping by half next year!
Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş Ayaz stated that the first step to deciding on the right profession that suits our personality traits, abilities, and interests is to conduct research, and concluded her warnings and suggestions as follows:
“Definitely allocate a part of this period to research. The preference days organized by universities will be very beneficial for you to get detailed information about both the university and the departments and programs you are considering. If you do not have the opportunity to see the universities in person based on your location, you can access detailed information about departments, courses taught, post-graduation job opportunities, and facilities provided by the university from their websites. Do not make preferences just to get into a department during this period. If you are placed in a department that is not suitable for you and where you will not be happy, your secondary education achievement score will drop by half next year. Be sure to check the special conditions and requirements of the departments you will include in your preference list from the guide.”
