Üsküdar Üniversitesi's Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Health Application and Research Center hosted the 32nd session of the '1 Topic 1 Guest' program. The guest of the program was Saygın Şener, Maintenance Engineer at Ereğli Iron and Steel Factories Inc.
In the program held via Zoom Webinar, Şener shared important information with the participants through his presentation titled 'Basic OHS Principles in Lifting Equipment in the Iron and Steel Sector'.
“Our priority is always safety”
Şener, touching upon crane maintenance within the scope of lifting equipment, said: “Our priority is always safety. As occupational health and safety specialists, we are responsible for both maintenance and periodic inspections. The old regulation stated that maintenance should be done every three months, but according to the current regulation, once a year was sufficient. We still conduct our inspections every three months. Because if we fall below these inspections, various malfunctions can occur. Cranes need to be constantly maintained.”
“We prioritize environmental safety in our work”
Şener, speaking about environmental safety in occupational health and safety, stated: “In all our work, safety comes first. Before starting our work, we need to secure the environment; we prioritize environmental safety. Before a crane goes for maintenance or inspection, we consult with the crane's operations manager. We inform them that we will be performing inspection and work on that crane and communicate that necessary precautions must be taken. Once this is ensured, before we start work, we cordon off areas where cars and people might enter. And we always have an observer.”
